A coalition of prominent conservative leaders are working to stop mainstream journalists throughout the country from relying on the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center as an acceptable source for coverage on matters involving extremist activities within the U.S.

“All reputable news organizations should immediately stop using the SPLC’s descriptions of individuals and organizations based on its obvious political prejudices,” the letter, signed by an impressive array of conservative organizations, says.

The letter comes as a growing number of media outlets are turning to SPLC as a source for hate-related coverage in the wake of deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., earlier this year.

But, the conservative organizations point out, the left-wing nonprofit has a nasty history of applying the “hate” label to organizations simply for supporting conservative ideals.

“The SPLC is an attack dog of the political left,” the conservatives said. “Having evolved from laudable origins battling the Klan in the 1970’s, the SPLC has realized the profitability of defamation, churning out fundraising letters, and publishing ‘hit pieces’ on conservatives to promote its agenda and pad its substantial endowment (of $319 million).”

“Anyone who opposes them, including many Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and traditional conservatives, is slandered and slapped with the ‘extremist’ label or even worse, their ‘hate group’ designation. At one point, the SPLC even added Dr. Ben Carson to its ‘extremist’ list because of his biblical views (and only took him off the list after public outcry).”

The mainstream media regularly parrot SPLC’s listing of “right wing hate groups” in stories and use the organization as a source for information on racism and intolerance. These articles advance the false meme that all liberty lovers are terrorists and racists who are plotting to march on Washington with guns blazing.

Meanwhile, the group largely ignores actual hate and violence coming from the left.
