Trump DOJ says no way on revisiting IRS targeting of conservatives

The Obama administration’s Department of Justice refused to prosecute anyone involved in the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservatives despite ample evidence that the tax agency had become a playground for leftist activists. House conservatives asked the new administration to give the case a second look back in April. No thanks, said Trump’s DOJ on Friday.

House Ways and Means Committee chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Tax Policy Subcommittee chairman Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) called for a new investigation into evidence that former IRS official Lois Lerner intentionally attempted to quell the activities of conservative organizations via IRS meddling.

“On April 9, 2014, the House Committee on Ways and Means voted to send a letter to the Department of Justice referring former IRS Exempt Organizations Division Director Lois G. Lerner for criminal prosecution,” Brady and Roskam said earlier this year. “As indicated in the attached letter, the Committee’s nearly three-year investigation uncovered evidence of willful misconduct on the part of Ms. Lerner. Despite this fact, and for what many believe were purely partisan reasons, the prior Administration refused to review Ms. Lerner’s misconduct.”

The lawmakers added that a 2015 DOJ decision to leave the matter alone was clearly a result of “President Obama’s signal on how he wanted the investigation to be handled.”

“Taxpayers deserve to know that the DOJ’s previous evaluation was not tainted by politics,” they added.

The current Justice Department headed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions evidently disagrees.

In response to the lawmaker request, the DOJ said “reopening the criminal investigation would not be appropriate based on the available evidence.”

In response to what he classified as a “terrible decision, Brady said the Trump administration is sending “the message that the same legal, ethical, and constitutional standards we all live by do not apply to Washington political appointees.”
