Trump hints at coming healthcare executive order

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that he plans to use the “power of the pen” to address healthcare after Congress failed to agree on an Obamacare overhaul plan.

Late last month, Senate GOP leaders announced they didn’t have the votes to push through the latest wildly unpopular bid to repeal Obamacare.

That failed Obamacare repeal push, brainchild legislation of Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), would have kept most of Obamacare in place while diverting funding for programs such as Medicaid to individual states. The legislation would also have allowed the GOP establishment to claim “victory” on Obamacare repeal without creating massive troubles for GOP moderates like  Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Ak.) in states now reliant on government largess which came via Obamacare’s massive Medicaid expansion.

Essentially, the legislation was a bid to move Obamacare funds around– which proponents billed as a plus because it theoretically would have given states more control over how healthcare funding is handled.

Opponents of the legislation disagreed, noting that the bill only served as a sort of false Obamacare re-write that fell far short of promises to repeal the Obama administration’s healthcare law.

Last week, Trump reached out to Senate minority Leader Chuck Schumer in an effort to revive the overhaul effort with helps from Democrats. But, according to reports, the president was able to make little headway reaching across the aisle.

On Tuesday, Trump suggested via Twitter that he’ll now attempt to go it alone in reworking Obamacare.
