Middle East Patients Unknowing of Plastic Surgery Risks
Reports of the rise in plastic surgery in the Middle East reached the attention of the international news agencies.
Despite the conservative practices of people in the Middle East, cosmetic surgery is on the rise. Dubai has become a hub for people who seek help from plastic surgeons. Reconstructive surgery and cosmetic techniques are among the most popular. However, patients are not informed well of the risks that they are about to take when they undergo plastic surgery.
Dr Allen Rezai, based in Dubai Healthcare City, observed that “Many patients are happy to have highly invasive procedures done far from hospitals facilities. Patients are often not educated about the risks involved and they generally view cosmetic surgery as being less serious than other medical related surgeries”.
In the United States, plastic surgeons also emphasize the importance of doing your own research before you go under the knife. Several websites and online resources are available for locating and checking the track records of doctors and physicians. Patients can also check with the American Board of Plastic Surgeons whether their doctor have the proper certification and qualifications.
“Botched surgeries cannot solely be blamed to surgeons since some of the patients are also making the wrong choices,” says a board-certified plastic surgeon from California, Dr Daniel H. Lin of http://shinecosmeticsurgery.com/.
“Recent reports of cosmetic surgeries gone awry and wrongful deaths prove that the choice for undergoing facial cosmetic surgery should be taken seriously,” says the President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Shan Baker. “Whether undergoing a surgical operation, such as a face lift, or a non-surgical procedure like Botox injections, patients need to be mindful that these are all medical procedures that should be performed by the hands of a well-trained, qualified, and experienced facial plastic surgeon.”
Dr Rezai speculates that a lot of men and women from the Middle East do not fully realize that they are about to undergo a major surgical operation. He adds that any surgery which involves general anesthesia should be performed in the safe confines of hospitals and clinics only.
There have been a lot of reconstructive operations being sought in the Middle East. Women who have fallen victims to the so-called acid terrorism are in need of burn and trauma surgery to put together their faces back. This brutal act has been documented in the award-winning documentary Saving Face where women told their stories.
