5 Steps to Getting Your License Reinstated in Illinois

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Driving is a privilege in Illinois and if you get busted for a DUI, you may have your privilege revoked. As a result, you will need to know how to get your license reinstated.

Here’s a look at the five major steps to reinstating your license:

]]>

  • Wait for your eligibility date. If you are convicted of a DUI, you may have your license suspended for a set period of time. After that period of time has passed, you may be eligible to apply for reinstatement. Keep in mind that reinstatement is not automatic and you must take proactive steps to get your driving privileges back.
  • Contact a hearing officer. You will need to contact a hearing officer and have a consultation regarding why your license was taken away and why you deserve it back. If your record reflects a DUI, you must complete an alcohol/drug evaluation in which you may be ordered to complete an alcohol/drug remedial education class. High-risk individuals may also need to provide letters of reference from recovery programs.
  • Attend a hearing. At the hearing, you will have an opportunity to present your case before an adjudicator as to why you should have your license reinstated. If denied, you can appeal the decision at another hearing.
  • Pay fees. If your license is reinstated, you will have to pay reinstatement fees, possibly pay to install an ignition interlock device, and prove financial responsibility over the car.
  • Take a driver’s test. You will be required to take a full or partial driver’s test to complete your application to have your license reinstated. The nature of the test will depend upon your past history.
  • As you can see, the path to get your Illinois driver’s license reinstated after a DUI is an expensive pain. The best way to avoid this process is to not drive drunk in the first place.
