Family, friends raise money for teen who defended mother

Harned – Family and friends of a Kentucky teenager who is being tried in the case of his stepfather’s death are now rallying behind the teen, trying to raise money for his defense.

A 17-year-old teenager from Harned in Breckinridge County, Kentucky is being accused of first degree manslaughter after a domestic dispute at his home turned deadly. On April 23, 2013, the seventeen year old (who will remain known simply as “Josh”) was at his home when his mother was allegedly being pulled across the yard and beaten by the teen’s step-father. Witnesses say the teen went inside to grab a gun in order to stop his step-father from continuing to harm his mother. When the teen returned from the house, he proceeded to shoot his step-father with a Mosin Nagant, a bolt-action rifle.

Witnesses also claim that after the shot was fired, the teen asked his mother to move away before attempting to perform medical treatment and telling bystanders to call 911. Josh’s mother says the teen had no intention of killing his stepfather; he simply wanted to stop him.

According to neighbors, friends, and family members, domestic violence was not rare in this household. One neighbor was reported as saying that arguing and screaming could often be heard coming from the house. The Liberty Sun and Digital Journal.com reporter Alex Allen spoke with one of the teen’s friends who had this to say:

Josh has always been the one to stop Hugo. Usually, he would talk Hugo down and calm him. Sometimes he even slept on the kitchen floor to make sure nothing happened at night. He never really liked to talk about it but it you saw his mother, you’d suspect it had happened.

Josh’s family and friends are now banning together to raise money for the teen’s defense. The family, because of their poor financial standing, cannot afford a private attorney and the teen is currently being represented by public defenders. They have started a Facebook page titled “Defense Fund for Joshua Against Domestic Violence.” One of the first posts on the Facebook page says this:

I ask that you pray for him. Domestic violence is a real serious problem affecting countless American families, just ask any law enforcement officer and they will tell you that DV calls are the most unpredictable.

Josh was set to graduate from high school in May and was planning to join the Marine Corp.
