SiamSato
While browsing for beer in a 7/11 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I saw a bottle of SiamSato sitting between the bottles of Chang lager and Tiger lager, initially I thought it was also a lager, but I couldn’t tell exactly because most of the label was written in Thai. The only writing in English was the name and the fact that is was 8% vol.
Always one to try out a new beer, I put a bottle of SiamSato in the shopping basket and took it to the check-out.
It was not until I opened the bottle back in our hotel room that I realised I’d been sold a pup. The liquid was clear and sweet and musty. From this I deduced that it was some kind of rice wine.
On tasting it was very sweet indeed with a rice wine flavour, but not a pleasant one.
Very sweet under notes mixed with chemicals. A strange brew and not one that I would want to try again.
I can not figure out who this drink is aimed at? Maybe the makers are thinking alcopop for the local youth market? But then there are already loads of alcopop drinks available in Thailand with the same sweetness and alcohol content the difference being they taste half decent.
