London Olympics Opening Ceremony aka “Field and Stream?”

For the third time, London will host the Olympic games with Opening Ceremonies taking place July 27, 2012.

The 1908 Olympic Games were scheduled to take place in Rome, but the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 7 April 1906 required the Italian government to redirect funds away from the Olympics. The Olympics instead took place in London with 22 nations participating in 110 events.

The 1944 Summer Olympics (Games of the XIII Olympiad) were scheduled to be held in London. Awarded in 1939, they were, however, cancelled due to World War II. These Games would have celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Modern Olympiad. The 1948 Summer Olympics (the Games of the XIV Olympiad) were the first to be held after World War II. Showing a collective unity after the war, 59 nations competed in 136 different events between 29 July 1948 and 14 August 1948. Germany and Japan were not invited.

The 2012 Summer Olympics (the Games of the XXX Olympiad) are planned to take place between 27 July 2012 and 12 August 2012 but there seems to be a bit of controversy over the theme and design of the Opening Ceremony.

Fake clouds that rain? I never thought London, or England for that matter, needed any help with clouds or rain???

I guess when I first heard about the plan for the design I expected a picturesque village green – like those seen in an episode of “Midsomer Murders.” I would have been hard pressed to figure out how constructing such a village would cost around $42.5 million US dollars. Then I read this theme is supposed to mirror Glastonbury – “A Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts.”

Now I’m confused – and I’m not alone.

I’m also confused by the logo for the London 2012 Olympics.

Maybe I need more coffee, but it took a bit of study to even notice the “2012″ in the logo chosen for the games.

This Opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics will be called ‘The Isles of Wonder.’

I “wonder” how many people will be scratching their head after the opening – still trying to figure out the concept.

Interesting Notes – London 2012

+ In Great Britain, ticket prices range from £20 for many events to £2,012 for the most expensive seats at the opening ceremony.

+ As of 13 June 2012, 189 countries have qualified at least one athlete.

+ The games will be officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

+ Sir Paul McCartney has announced he will perform at the close of the ceremony.
