Selimiye Mosque, Edirne, Turkey
Whilst staying in Edirne for a few days we visited the selimiye Mosque. Whilst we were there it was very peaceful, with only about half a dozen other people wandering about. We enjoyed our time there, more so because we were far from the madding crowd.
The Selimiye Mosque, or Selimiye Camii, is an Ottoman mosque in Edirne, Turkey.
Selimiye Mosque was built by the architect Mimar Sinan, he was the master builder during the peak of the Ottoman empire in the 16th century.
Construction of the mosque commenced with the ground breaking in 1568 and completion of the building in 1575.
Apparently Mimar Sinan considered the Selimiye Mosque to be his masterpiece.
The mosque was constructed for Sultan Selim II, building was completed just after his death.
The exterior and interior of Selimiye Mosque are impressive.
The wide, imposing dome is supported by eight pillars, arches, and external buttresses, creating a deceptively spacious interior. Because the pillars only carry a portion of the weight of the dome the walls are strong enough to hold the dozens of windows which flood the moque with light.
The natural light illuminates the colourful decorations, decorative tiles, and calligraphy of the interior.
Sitting below the main dome of the mosque is a prayer-reader’s platform, underneath which is a small fountain. The details of the carved marble pulpit (mimber) are beautiful, and the niche (mihrab which points in the direction of Mecca) has attractive Iznik tile work, due to Mimar Sinan’s design the mihrab can be seen from everywhere in the mosque.
Selimiye mosque was depicted on the reverse of the Turkish 10,000 lira banknotes of 1982-1995.
Selimiye Mosque was ranked on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as the 10th World Heritage Site on 2011.
