Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey
We queued in the hot sun for our entrance tickets to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey.
Once we’d purchased our tickets, we joined yet another queue and so on and so on.
It was very busy everywhere we went.
Not only was it busy, but much of the palace was closed, either for restoration or, I have no idea – just closed.
Maybe it was because we couldn’t actually get in to see a lot of the Topkapi Palace, or maybe it was because we were just too exhausted from our travels, but neither of us were really in the mood to enjoy it, or to take photos or shoot video.
It was crazily busy with seriously long queues to view the treasures, which was a shame, as they may have increase our appetite for the place.
Apparently there’s a lot to see at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, but we barely saw any of it.
The list of possibly interesting things to see includes ~
Palace Kitchens
The baths of the Sultan and the Queen Mother
Circumcision Room
Imperial Carriages
Harem
Portrait Gallery
Enderûn Library (Library of Ahmed III)
Imperial Tresaury
Courtyard of the Eunichs
Hall of the Ablution Fountain
~ To name but a few.
We did get to go in to the Circumcision Room. A lot of men were clearly wincing at the thought of it.
The Topkap? Palace was the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for roughly 400 years of their 624-year reign, from 1465 until 1856.
Construction of the place commenced in 1459, commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II.
The site is made up of four courtyards and lots of smaller building. In its heyday the place was home to approximately 4,000 people. There would have been mosques, bakeries, a mint, and a hospital within the palace.
Over time the place has grown with numerous renovations.
The Topkapi Palace became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
The Topkapi Palace was opened as a museum in April 1924
Today it’s a popular tourist attraction, and home to holy relics of the Muslim world which included the Prophet Muhammed’s cloak and sword.
It also houses collections Ottoman jewellery and treasures, as well as robes, porcelain, weapons, shields, armor, Ottoman miniatures, and Islamic calligraphic manuscripts and murals.
The Topkapi Palace is open daily, except Tuesdays, between 9am until 5pm.
During the Summer it has longer opening hours 9am until 7pm.
Entrance fee 25 Turkish Lire, plus an extra 15 Turkish Lire for the Harem.
