Travel Wishes II – Destination “D”
Named and founded by William Penn in 1683 for a town in England, Dover, Delaware is the “D” destination on this travel wishes list.
Small in size but never in stature, Delaware’s Capital Region is rich in history and heritage. Much of the that appeal has to do with the county’s unparalleled aesthetics, be it the blend of sweeping farmland and picturesque coastal scenery, group-friendly museums, or well-preserved historical areas that stand as a proud testament to Delaware’s key role in the founding of a nation.
Visit any time of year to enjoy Kent County’s small-town charm, unassuming nature, and down home hospitality everywhere from our Capital City of Dover, to Smyrna, to Harrington, to Milford and quaint waterside communities like Leipsic and Bowers Beach.
Dover is one of the fast-growing areas in the state of Delaware, due in large part to the relatively low cost of living. Dover’s significant employers include Dover Air Force Base, located within the southeast corporate limits of the city. The base houses two airlift wings as well as the U.S. military’s only mortuary in the continental United States, which accepts and processes the remains of soldiers killed in battle.
Two weekends a year, NASCAR races are held at Dover International Speedway, attracting close to 100,000 spectators and visitors and temporarily making Dover the state’s largest city. These races, and in recent years adjacent slot machine gambling, contribute millions of dollars to Dover’s economy.
Weather – What To Expect
Dover has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are mild, but conditions then are moderated by the Delaware Bay and the partial shielding of the Appalachians. Snow is typically light and sporadic, averaging 14 inches (36 cm), falling a few inches (
Most of my time spent in Dover had to do with NASCAR. However, I do remember those drives from Southern Maryland early on a Sunday morning and seeing the beautiful farms and green pastures of Delaware. I can vouch for the fact that Delaware’s May and September weather are usually perfect for race day, or would be for a long weekend spent at the beach – ahead of (or after) the crowds of summer. If a peaceful trip away from the hustle and noise of a large city is what you need – put Dover on your list of destinations.
Dover is less than 100 miles (about 2 hours) from Washington, DC and only 165 miles (around 3 hours) from New York City. This makes Dover a great destination for a long weekend and only a short drive for those last minute “I Need A Break” getaways.
