Durres, Albania
We arrived in Durres by bus from Vlore at about midday.
We hadn’t booked any place to stay, but we’d seen a hotel online that we thought was o.k. in an area we also thought would be good for us.
The bus dropped us at the main beach area of Durres, which was a fair distance from the main centre of town, so we hopped in a taxi (500 Lek).
There’s not a great deal to see in Durres apart from the old Venetian Fort, and an Amphitheatre, but it was pleasant to stroll round the town, and along the promenade in the evenings. There are restaurants and bars galore, so there was always somewhere to stop and sit and watch the world go by.
Eating in Durres
Holiday Restaurant.
We had lunch on our first day in Durres at Holiday restaurant, mainly because it was just around the corner from our hotel, and we also ate dinner there a couple of times. The food was consistently good as was the service.
We ate various dishes including chicken and potatoes, which came as chips, mixed salad, shrimp cocktail, prawn risotto, seafood linguine, tortellini with spicy sausage, and penne with shrimp, courgette, and tomato.
Trave E Famshme.
We ate dinner at Trave E Famshme one evening. Chicken kebabs all round. It was bland but filling, served with stone cold chips, and a very nice rich creamy yogurt. Beer was nice and cold, and helped wash the food down.
Drinking in Durres
Torre Cafe.
Probably one of the best bars in Albania. In is situated in an old Venetian Tower with views over the port and promenade. The beer wasn’t a bad price, and the views were priceless.
Fly Bar.
16 floors up this rooftop bar had panoramic views of Durres. It was very popular with the younger crowd.
Vino.
I had my first decent bottle of Albanian wine. A 2005 Xhoda from Kantina E Familjes Tufa.
