TYPHOON HAIKUI – August 2012

Today, August 7, 2012 marks one of the rainiest day (after Ondoy) I’ve encountered. The Typhoon HAIKUI is really scary considering that it’s been raining for the past few weeks.

Last night, I walked in a 4″ water deep flood outside our village. I was informed that come midnight, it’s already waist-deep. I’m living in the Cainta area, Ortigas Extension. Flood alerts are from Junction up until Valleygolf. The last thing I heard that roads are not passable. I’ve been awake since 5.45am and was reading all the tweets from News accounts regarding the status of different areas. It was really heart crunching to see MANY if not all Metro Manila is flooded at this hour.

Research and Rescue are being done by Red Cross, MMDA and other government authorities. Evacuation centers are also available since some schools opened their classrooms to be used as shelters. Malls are open to the public for shelter as well since many of our brothers and sisters are stranded because of this heavy rains.

The alert level in Marikina is already in Red Alert meaning they need to evacuate fast. However, there are still hard headed communities who doesn’t want to relocate and won’t leave their houses. I know they’ve worked hard for it but their life is so much more important. It is best to be safe than sorry.

Also, there are drop off centers in Megamall and MallOfAsia for relief goods as well as in other parts of the Metro. I’m not sure where exactly are the places. Even Globe and Smart has a promo for today “Libreng Tawag” for everyone for emergency purposes.

Weather Advisory No. 5 For: Southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm “Haikui” Issued at: 11:00 AM, 07 August 2012 The Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm “Haikui” located 300 km Northeast of Taiwan will continue to bring occasional to frequent rains over Luzon becoming moderate to heavy rains in the Provinces of Ilocos, La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and National Capital Region today until tomorrow with gradual improvement of weather condition by Thursday and onwards to the weekend. Expect landslides/flashfloods in mountainous areas and floods in low lying areas.

The next update will be incorporated in the public weather forecast at 5:00 pm today while the next advisory will be issued at 11:00 am tomorrow.

There is also an online application called Project Noah for you to be aware of how heavy the rains are in the country. It’s a bit confusing at first but they’ve provided a tutorial for the tool. See here for the tutorial on how to use it.

The MMDA has also suspended the number coding scheme in Metro Manila due to flooding. In its official Twitter account, the MMDA said: “Number Coding is lifted in WHOLE Metro Manila today including Makati.”

Torrential rains since Sunday evening have triggered flooding in low-lying areas in Metro Manila.

We don’t know until when this rain would really end. Please be safe and keep yourself dry. Pray hard so that the Lord would hear our cries to save the Philippines.
