Studio Apartment, Bratislava, Slovakia

We rented a studio apartment in Bratislava, Slovakia, for four nights from ApartmentsCityCentre

Our train from Prague, Czech Republic to Bratislava was late arriving, about an hour late, which meant we were late meeting the owner of our rental apartment.
Eventually we met, initially he wasn’t welcoming, he said we should have phoned to let him know we would be late. We couldn’t phone as we didn’t have a simcard for Slovakia, and saw no public telephones nearby.
We were just about to email him, using the free WiFi we manged to get on, when he arrived in his car at the garage gate to the studio apartment.
We were shown up to the apartment, which was on the top floor of a renovated building, reached via the garage door and courtyard come car-park.
We saw the man who met us when we arrived briefly the following day, he was much friendlier.

The studio apartment was contemporary, and very well equipped.
As we entered the front door to the studio apartment there was a small hall with a shoe chest, mirror, shelf unit and several hooks.
The kitchen was the next room, which was compact but had everything we needed. There was a two ring electric hob, a fridge, small dishwasher, toaster, kettle, and a small oven.
There were ample cupboards, some of which contained glasses, mugs, bowls plates etc. Saucepans, chopping boards etc. were stored in large drawers.
The kitchen cupboards were very deep, which meant the one above the sink made the area quite dark. There was a little strip light underneath the cupboard, but it didn’t work. Also because the cupboards were so deep it was not easy to use the sink without banging our heads on the cupboard, which we did – a lot.
We’re not particularly tall, pretty much average height, someone taller would have even more bumps to their head.
The oven was very awkward to use, the handle to open the door was easily 6 foot high. We didn’t use the oven, and I doubt it would be possible to use it without burning your arms on the pull-down door.

The main room of the studio apartment was off of the kitchen, it had an air-conditioning unit. It contained a double bed, a high wall mounted bench with four high stools, two small armchairs and a small coffee table, a huge fitted wardrobe, a low level shelf unit, and a large flatscreen wall-mounted TV.
The bed was comfortable, although as it was in a corner of the room, it meant one of us had to climb in and out from the end of the bed.
Also the bed was lacking in proper linen. The mattress was covered with a couple of mattress protectors, or Winter under-sheets. There were two single quilt covers folded on the foot of the bed when we arrived. The pillows were very large, but not that comfortable as they were a bit thin, but at least they had proper pillow cases on them. There was a decorative piece of bed dressing, but no warm quilts or blankets.
The hanging rail in the wardrobe was as high as the oven in the kitchen. We could only just reach it. There were four drawers inside the bottom half of the wardrobe.

The bathroom was a good size, it had a full size bath, and a bidet. The water was always lovely and hot, and the water pressure was nice and strong.
The shower was over the bath, it had a nice big shower head, but it was mounted low on the wall so impossible to stand under it to shower, we had to hold the shower head to use it. Also there was no shower screen or shower curtain. This didn’t bother us, but we were surprised that the owner hadn’t fitted a screen of some sort to protect the bathroom from getting a good soaking every time guests shower.
There was a top loading washing machine in the bathroom. When we arrived the door on the washing machine was closed. When we opened it to use it the smell was horrible, nasty mould. There were signs of green mould around the seal on the inside of the lid. The mouldy smell lingered in the bathroom for a couple of days. Leaving the door open would solve this problem. We left the door open.

There was WiFi in the apartment, the speed was pretty good.
The apartment had lots of things that often get overlooked when renting, including hair dryer, washing line over the bath, heated towel rail in the bathroom, free standing clothes airier etc.
The TV didn’t have any English language channels apart from BBC World News, and CNN.
There was a small balcony, standing room only, off of the main living room, bedroom, of the studio apartment.
The studio apartment was in a very good location right on the main shopping street of the town, and within a couple of minutes walk of the old town.
There were a plethora of eating and drinking places within walking distance.
The finish on everything in the studio apartment was very good, and despite being on the main road it was very quiet because the studio overlooked the courtyard/car-park. It was surrounded by buildings, private residences, and businesses.
We enjoyed our stay.
