10 Cheapest Ways to Explore Africa

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Traveling to Africa could be the vacation of a lifetime. It is a place that has a rich culture and history as well as very diverse ecosystems across the continent. You can enjoy the beaches, climb mountains, visit the forests, drive through the desert; hike through the jungle, there really is something for everyone. Traveling to another continent can be very expensive so to help our readers save some money we wanted to put together a list of the 10 cheapest ways to explore Africa.

1. The Dune Express Tour

The Dean Express Tour offers visitors an affordable way to explore Africa by taking a 14 to 16 day train ride from Namibia to Cape Town. The name of the train you will ride on this tour is the Shongololo which is the Zulu word for millipede. On this tour you will start out in Namibia where you get to see an incredible landscape and the tour will pass through the city of Windhoek, the Etosha National Park, Omarur – the garden town of Namibia, Spitzkoppe – the Granite Mountains, Henties Bay, Cape Cross Seal Reserve and a number of other incredible places before you arrive in Cape Town.

2. Take an Overland Trip

An Overland trip is a great way to tour Africa on a budget. You simply book the route you would like to take and then you get on an Overland truck and join approximately 20 other travelers as you explore a predetermined route, stopping at several different attractions along the way. Some Overland trips include accommodations where you stay at a hotel at night or you can also choose a trip that involves camping, which of course would be the more affordable option.

3. Rent a Car and Take a Road Trip

Renting a car is not terribly expensive and your biggest expenses will likely be fuel, food, and hotel rooms for the night. Renting a car gives you the freedom to go where you want to go and see what you want to see. To make sure you spend your money wisely, take some time to plan your trip carefully. Figure out where you want to go and how long it will take to get to each of the places on your list. Then you can look for the cheapest hotels or campgrounds along the way.

4. Motorcycle Tours

Another great way to explore Africa is to go on a motorcycle Safari. There are on road and off-road options that will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Booking a motorcycle tour gives you the benefit of a guide that knows the local area and can take you on the best maintained roads to show you the most interesting sites.

5. Cycling

Riding a mountain bike is another great way to explore Africa and mountain bike safaris are an increasingly popular choice. There are private game reserves in Southern Africa and East Africa where you can book a mountain biking tour where you can take in the beautiful scenery and view exotic wildlife.

6. Hiking and Trekking

Hiking can be a very cost-effective way to explore Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is a very popular destination for hikers and trekkers. It is the highest peak in Africa at 19,336 feet and more than 20,000 people attempt to climb this mountain each year.

There are hiking and trekking tours available in Africa for people of all fitness levels. Some are very easy and some are physically grueling. You can book walking tours that will take you through just about every type of landscape. Some walking tours let you carry just a day pack while you walk to your next destination and the rest of your luggage is transported to a guesthouse or bed-and-breakfast for you.

7. Backpacking

You need to be physically fit because backpacking can be hard work but it is also a wonderful and affordable way to explore Africa. You can backpack through the jungle, forest, along the coast, or in any number of other types of terrain. One great location to go backpacking is Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi is a beautiful freshwater lake and it is also very large, taking up about one third of the entire country of Malawi.

8. Explore Africa on Horseback

Exploring Africa on horseback gives you an opportunity to really experience the great outdoors. You can ride along the beach, through the savanna, in a pine forest, or in the jungle. A lot of horseback riding tours give visitors the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife including klipspringer, kudu, warthog, jackal, zebra, impala, baboons, and giraffes just to name a few.

9. Affordable Safaris

An African safari can be very expensive and there are a lot of high-end tours. However, there are also a number of affordable safari tours available. You may need to do a little bit of research on the Internet or talk to a travel agent but there are plenty of safaris available for the budget minded traveler.

10. Take Advantage of Last-Minute Deals

A trip to another continent usually involves quite a bit of planning but if you are prepared to take advantage of any last-minute deals, you could find an opportunity to travel at a greatly reduced price. Flights, hotels, even cruises can all be booked at a significant discount if there are any unsold tickets available. Taking advantage of a last-minute deal is not for everyone and you have to be flexible and somewhat adventurous, but if you’re up to the challenge, it is a great way to explore Africa at a bargain price.
