3 Artistic Places not to Miss in Tenerife
Tenerife is the most populous and largest of the Canary Islands and has many cultural opportunities worth visiting and spending time on. The three tourist attractions featured are important because they offer insight into the island’s extensive and varied cultural backgrounds. By flying over these places in Tenerife a tourist can get a good feel for the rich history of the Canary Islands.
La Recova Arts Centre
La Recova Arts Centre is popular with tourists and locals alike because many of the artists who feature their works live in the Canary Islands, so the artwork is from local artists, many of whom learned their craft from the City School of Graphic Arts which is headquartered in La Recova. Art exhibitions are held on a regular basis. It is a historic building because it is based out of a former food market, the building is more than 500 years old, easily located at Plaza de la Madera in the heart of Tenerife.
Municipal Museum of Fine Arts
The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts is worth a visit because it houses an extensive collection of the best painters in the Canary Islands, showcasing their creativity in various artistic styles, spanning work from the 16th to the 21st centuries. Among permanent collections include a portrait of Isabel II by Madrazo, and the painting of San Jose by Ribera, both prominent local painters. The building features ten different display halls of various sculptures and paintings as well as artwork from the world famous Museo del Prado in Madrid, so this is like having two museums in one! Furthermore, there is the Marquis de Villasegura’s personal furniture collection which is worth a look.
Photographic Gallery
Then there’s the Photographic Gallery, for those interested in the fine art that is photography. It was created in 1989, but has become an important part of the local history in such a short time. Anything related to photography can be found here, not just pictures. For instance, it features a photo lab as well as a conference room, and a library with more than 3,500 volumes. Furthermore, it features spaces for the exhibition and study of both contemporary and traditional forms of photography.
