5 Commonsense Tips for Driving in Heavy Rain
Living in Oregon, the first thing most people have to get used to is the rain. While it’s not always heavy, it is regular, at least in the northwestern quadrant of the state. Driving in the rain isn’t as treacherous as driving on ice or snow, at least it doesn’t have to be. Still, it’s a liquid state of matter interposed between your tires and the road, so it shouldn’t be dismissed as inconsequential.
Oregonians are accustomed to driving in the rain, but that doesn’t mean accidents don’t happen. While some of these tips may seem obvious, it’s often the most obvious things that are most easily overlooked. So take heed, check the weather report and stay safe on the roads this winter.
5 Tips for Safe Driving in Heavy Rain
One thing to note before going on. Driving in fresh rain on roads that are dry is another time to be cautious. That light sheen of moisture coupled with the buildup of oil and residue on the road makes for a slippery combination.
1. Drive Slower
Perhaps the most obvious of the tips is the one least likely to be heeded. Slow down in heavy rain. You don’t have to drive at a snail’s pace, but given that speed limits are determined based on optimal conditions, when they aren’t you should lay off the gas pedal. No matter what the conditions, you should always stay three seconds behind drivers ahead of you—more when it rains.
2. Follow in Other’s Tracks
If you drive in the tracks of drivers ahead of you, oftentimes you can benefit from their trailblazing. That is to say, as they plow through the storm, their tires force standing water out of the way. Follow those tracks and reap the rewards of better traction.
3. Use Your Low Beams
Headlights help others see you even if they don’t immediately impact your ability to see. In heavy rain you should use your low beams. Imagine high beams in fog—how it makes visibility worse. It’s similarly true in heavy rain. Low beams keep you in view of other drivers without inhibiting your ability to see.
4. Hydroplaning, Hydroplaning, Hydroplaning
Perhaps the most pressing concern with heavy rain driving is the danger of hydroplaning over standing water. If water pools up faster than your tires can push it away, it can actually raise your tires off the road. If that happens, you’re essentially driving on liquid. Tire tread is designed to channel water away, but sometimes the rain is just too heavy.
If you see pools of water on the road, there is a risk of hydroplaning. Firstly, slow down. The slower you go, the less likely you are to hydroplane. If it happens (it almost feels like your car is floating), don’t brake suddenly and don’t turn the steering wheel. Keep a straight tack and get through.
5. Stop if Needed
Last but not least, pull your car over if the rain is too heavy. If your wiper blades are going at full speed and you’re still having trouble with visibility, it’s time to ease off the road. Don’t worry. Hard rains don’t last very long, especially in Oregon. It’s just a slow drizzle for about eight months.
