Dubrovnik, Croatia

We arrived in Dubrovnik by bus from Split. The bus terminated at the ferry port which was a 10 minute (70 Kune/10 €) taxi from the old town.

Dubrovnik is a popular tourist destination and a World Heritage Site since 1979.
The old city is surrounded by approximately 2 kms of walls, measuring from 4-6 metres thick. It’s possible to stroll around the top of the city walls, which offer interesting views, but be warned it gets very busy with sightseers eager to photograph the city and sea.

Formerly known as Ragusa, Dubrovnik has been a wealthy city since the Middle Ages, thanks to maritime trade.
Modern day Dubrovnik became a well-known and thriving tourist spot after the construction of the luxury hotels in the late 19th Century in Croatia.
Dubrovnik is considered to be one of the top ten best walled cities in the World.

Eating in Dubrovnik, Croatia ~

Restaurant Orhan ~ www.restaurant-Orhan.com
We ate a late lunch at this restaurant overlooking the sea, and watching workers paint and distress the quality side for an upcoming filming project, Game of Thrones.
Laura had vegetable soup, a very small portion, but she said it was tasty. I ordered Dubrovnik Toast (toast with steak, asparagus, and cheese), which was decent.

Konoba Pizzeria Gajeta ~
We ate lunch sitting in the narrow alley outside this restaurant, away from the busy crowds of tourists. Laura had grilled chicken with chips, I had chicken risotto. Laura’s chicken was a generous size portion, nice and tender, my risotto was pretty good as were the chips I scoffed from Laura’s plate.

The Gaffe Pub ~
Yet another place we ate at purely chosen as it was away from the crowds, down a side street from the main drag.
Thai Green Curry for me, not Thai and not a curry but ok. Bean burger with chips, salad, and coleslaw for Laura. Laura doesn’t particularly like chips, she just likes to order them. She said the bean burger was mush, but the coleslaw was fine.

Chavs Cafe ~
Yep, Chav! Well, I had to name it some thing. I was the chef in the seriously pokey kitchen in our apartment. I rustled up tagliatelle with a tomato and aubergine sauce. A chunk of seeded whole wheat bread completed our meal. Best meal we ate whilst in Dubrovnik – obviously as it was cooked by my fair hands.

Drinking in Dubrovnik, Croatia ~

Katie O’Conners Irish Pub ~
An ‘Irish Pub’ just round the corner from our rental apartment. A bog standard place, but they served Westons Cider (32 Kune/50cl) on draft, so a decent place to stop for a pint. Ozujsko beer was 25 Kune for 50cl which was cheap for Dubrovnik.

Summary ~
Before visiting, we’d heard Croatia was a very expensive country, but hadn’t experienced that until we reached Dubrovnik. It was far more expensive than the other places we’d visited in Croatia, including the capital.
Despite it being October when we visited Dubrovnik, it was very busy with tourists, mainly cruise ships and coach trip tour groups.
The late season hot weather, and large number of visitors even made the local news.
Unfortunately as nice as Dubrovnik was, we weren’t unhappy to be leaving after our three night stay. The crowds were very unpleasant to say the least, and my wallet took a real battering. Even a simple meal of pasta, poorly executed, cost £10/12€.
Having said that, Dubrovnik is a very scenic place with many interesting photo opportunities, especially if like me, you get up at the crack of dawn and get snapping before the hordes of tourists descend on the town at about 8am.

Moving on ~
On the day we arrived we purchased bus tickets to Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the morning of our departure we caught a taxi (fixed price of 70 Kune/10€) from the Old Town to the bus station. There was not a lot at the bus station, apart from a kiosk selling drinks, ciggarettes etc. and a money changer who did not have any Bosnia Marks.
For hot refreshment there were two drinks vending machines in the waiting room, which wasn’t much of a waiting room as the were only five seats.
Just across the road from the bus station was a small supermarket and a cafe.
