Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

We arrived in Mostar by coach from Dubrovnik, Croatia. It was a double decker coach, we had seats on the top at the very front, which afforded excellent views of the landscape as we trundled along the coast road.
We only spent one night in Mostar but we managed to do a good bit of walking and saw lots of interesting, and thought provoking places.

Mostar is situated on the Neretva river, over which is the major tourist attraction of the town, the Stari Most (Old Bridge).
The Old Bridge was built in the 16th Century by the Ottomans, it is considered one of the best examples of Islamic architecture in the Balkans, and is one of the most well-known landmarks in Bosnia and Herzegovinia.
Mostar was named after the Mostari, the bridge keepers, who guarded the Old Bridge in Medieval times.

Eating in Mostar ~
We ate lunch at one of the many restaurants in the old town. I can’t remember the name of it. We randomly chose from the menu, receiving two similar dishes of grilled meat, salad, and bread, hearty and tasty.

Mostar Inn ~
Who eat all the pies? We did.
We popped out for dinner in the evening, but didn’t want to eat in the old town area, so we strolled round the area close to our accommodation. We saw the Mostar Inn at the end of the road but walked further to see what else was on offer.
We soon returned to the Mostar Inn where the friendly helpful waitress offered us pies. She offered us, meat pie, cheese pie, or potato pie. I chose meat, Laura opted for potato. Within a few seconds we were served a large portion of pie each, both of which were very tasty and filling.
Whilst we sat stuffing our faces, several customers came and went with their takeaway pies wrapped tightly in foil to keep it warm.
The pie was so good we bought a potato one to take with us on the train the following day. Delicious, simple food.
We paid our bill and as we walked the few steps back to our accommodation the chef came running after us shouting, hello! He said too much, to much. Apparently we’d left too much money as a tip. We told him it was fine, and to give it to the waitress. He thanked us and smiled. What a lovely end to our evening.

Summary ~
Although we were only there for one day and night we enjoyed our short visit to Mostar. It was our first introduction to somewhere so recently worn torn, it was emotive to say the least.
There were a lot of tourists in Mostar all wandering round snapping photos and videos, as were we. In the old town there were numerous shops selling souvenirs and lots of paces to drink and eat.
We walked across the bridge, and then down along the river underneath the bridge, and we wandered away from the tourist area to soak up the atmosphere of the town.

Moving on ~
We purchased our onward train tickets to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzigovinia as soon as we arrived in Mostar. The ticket lady was very helpful informing us of the departure time and issuing us two second class tickets for our journey. The bus and train station are on in the same, with a couple of cafes and a kiosk selling drinks, cigarettes etc. There’s no proper waiting room, which no doubt explained the busy cafe.
