Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

We rolled into Sarajevo by train from Mostar.
We got lucky and had a cabin to ourselves. We took a taxi from the train station to our hotel on the edge of the old town. Our taxi driver was really good, pointing out lots of interesting landmarks on the way.

First impression of Sarajevo, it was cold. Ha! Well, it was October so I guess we shouldn’t complain, but after so long travelling in the sun we were really feeling the change in weather.
The town itself was pleasant enough, for a very short visit, but some idiot had booked us a four night stay – oops, that was me. ;o

Eating in Sarajevo ~

Kitchen Cheers/Pub Cheers ~
We shared a Sarajevo Pizza and a Caesar Salad. The pizza was pretty decent with a generous amount of tasty cured meat. The chicken Caesar salad was enjoyable, but not made In the a typical way.

Restoran Pod Lipom ~http://www.podlipom.ba
A plate of Bosnian Specialities for me, which consisted of various chunks of meat and one chunk of potato in a light gravy sauce. Laura ordered the homemade tagliatelle
with cheese, which was bland, she only ate a couple of mouthfuls. The service was poor. We left unimpressed and hungry.

Drinking in Sarajevo ~

City Pub ~ http://www.citypub.co.ba
A good place to stop for a beer. We went there a couple of times, it had nice cold beer, good service, a young vibe, live music and was always busy. They also had bottles of cider called InCider, avoid it. We tried it, it was very sweet, vile.

Zlatna Ribica ~
We found Zlatna Ribica, a quirky cafe/bar packed full of knick-knacks, whilst out walking. We likes it so much we went back a couple of times. Sitting inside had a warm cosy feel because of the low lighting and sheer amount of things dotted everywhere. It’s well worth a visit just to see the sheer amount of odds and ends covering every inch of wall space and surface. The service was friendly, the bottled beer we drank was icy cold, and the tea was good too. Don’t forget to use the toilet before you leave – it’s musical.

Summary ~
Four hours in Sarajevo would have been more than enough for us, let alone four days and nights. The choice of food was limited to say the least, and what was available was not to our liking. Junk food, mainly pizza, seemed to be haute cuisine. Most days we didn’t eat much at all, preferring to be hungry than eat bad food. It’s a sorry state of affair when a banana and a pot of yogurt are the best thing you eat over the course of four days in a city.
Due to the lack of decent food neither of us had the energy or enthusiasm to explore Sarajevo in any detail. We were both glad to leave.

Moving on ~

We purchased our onward train tickets to Belgrade in Serbia at the main train station (33 Marks each). There was not a great deal at the railway station apart from a couple of places to get a drink, and a kiosk to buy packet snacks, cigarettes etc.
If you are planning a long journey by train from Sarajevo, make sure to buy food and drinks before going to the train station.
