Reducing server load for a self hosted wordpress blog

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Over the last few months I’ve had a lot of problems with high server load for my blog and my web host has suspended it a number of times.

Not being a techie, I tried many things to fix it, including deleting unused plug-ins and themes. Deleting defunct sub-domains, and even getting rid of a lot of third party code (widgets etc.) from my sidebar and footer. Nothing seemed to work.

Next step was to install a few new plug-ins aimed at tackling the issue.

  • W3 Total Cache. To enable faster page loading and save bandwidth.
  • WordPress Gzip Compression. To enable faster page loading and save bandwidth.
  • WP-Optimize. Removing post revisions and spam in the database from within wordpress.
  • WP Smush.it. Reduces image sizes. Can also do it in bulk, 20 at a time. I have nearly 10,000 so not ‘bulk’ enough for me

Then a though occurred to me. What about spam comments. So I had a look at my recent spam and discovered most of it was comments on media files. Some days I’ve been getting over 500 spam comments, 90% on media files of over 200k.

The only solution and a drastic one was for me to close comments on the blog using ‘Disable Comments’ plug-in. Now it is fingers crossed time, with regard to server load.
