Brain Activity During Trance State, Explained By Experts

Some researchers at Thomas Jefferson University and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil made an analysis in the cerebral blood flow or CBF of a few Brazilian Mediums during a psychography. It’s described as a kind of writing where a person who died or we call spirit is believed to make some writings using a mediums hand. This new research showed interesting results of the decrease of brain activities during the medium’s trance state.

The researchers used 10 mediums. 5 were less experienced while the other half were experts. They were injected with radioactive tracer to get an image of brain activity during normal way of writing and during the practice of psychography. The subjects here enter a trance-like state. They were also scanned with the use of SPECT or Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. This is to emphasize the parts of the brain that are active and inactive during the practice.

“Spiritual experiences affect cerebral activity, this is known. But, the cerebral response to mediumship, the practice of supposedly being in communication with, or under the control of the spirit of a deceased person, has received little scientific attention, and from now on new studies should be conducted,” says Andrew Newberg, MD, the director of Research at the Jefferson –Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine. He is also known nationally as an expert when it comes to spirituality and the brain.

All the mediums spent about 15-47 years of automatic writing experience. They have performed up to 18 psychographies in a single month. All of them are right-handed, they are also good in their mental health and most of all they are not using any psychiatric drugs. During the study, all have reported that they were able to reach their usual trance-like state during the psychography task and they were also in their regular state of consciousness during the control task.

As a result, the researchers found out that the experienced mediums showed lower levels of activity in the left hippocampus, right superior temporal gyrus and the frontal lobe regions of the left anterior cingulate and right precental gyrus while in psychography as compared to their normal writing. The frontal lobe area of the brain is usually associated with reasoning, planning, language, movement and problem solving.

On the other hand, the less experienced mediums showed the opposite. The CBF levels increased in the frontal areas during trance as compared to normal writing. The difference is significant because it can be related to their purposeful attempt in performing the psychography.

“This first-ever neuroscientific evaluation of mediumistic trance states reveals some exciting data to improve our understanding of the mind and its relationship with the brain. These findings deserve further investigation both in terms of replication and explanatory hypotheses,” says Newberg.
