Movie Synopsis

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.

This I think is the one of the most popular musical I know of since I was young after Miss Saigon. In all honesty, I only know Les Miserables, pronounced as “Ley Miz” because of Lea Salonga’s portrayal of Eponine singing the famous “On My Own” song and Fantine singing another popular song “I Dreamed a Dream“. If not for her, I may not know about all these.

I love musicals as it brings emotions to life. It’s not only pleasing to the ears but it can really touch your heart. That’s why I want to learn theater acting with singing! Anyway, I’ve never seen a live theater play of Les Miserables so I can’t compare the film and the actual theater performance. I hope someday I can see the play live though. So all these notes, reactions are based from my personal views and thoughts of the film.

First, I know that they made a “musical” film but never did I thought that they will sing from the start until the end. Even at the brink of dying! It was amazing but I was really in awe. This was the first time I understood the movie.

It all happened during the French revolution. Too much suffering, slavery, sacrifices and death. It was really dark but a glimpse of hope in each one was there. For them, there will be a brighter tomorrow that sadly never came. A story of faith, hope and love that will surely makes your heart crunch.

On the lighter side, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway deserves to win the Oscars! Common! Even if Anne’s exposure was less than an hour, her performance was outstanding! If I can only stand after she sang “I dreamed a dream”, I would definitely do it. Hugh on the other hand sang from start to end. His portrayal of Jean Valjean was extraordinary. With all those singing and acting at the same time, the famous “wolverine” is really something!

The younger Cosette was so cute while the older Cosette played by Amanda Seyfried who I knew had a great voice because of Mama Mia, didn’t do a lot of acting. She sang gracefully and hit the high notes!

Eponine was also great! I had to see her past performances to know her history. It was my first time to see her and learned that she is just a teenager. She’ll have a great career ahead of her after having this big break as Eponine both on theater and film.

Russel Crowe was also amazing. I never thought he could sing that good. According to my friends, he’s into singing even before he started his acting career. Pretty talented Australians out there! Hahaha!

The rest of the cast did a great job especially the comical Thénardier couple. A bit disgusting performance in the Inn but peformed exceptional as thieves. Hehe!

It was a great movie and I hope I’d be able to see this live on theater!
