Movie Synopsis

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor … a fearsome Bengal tiger.

This was the first movie we watched for this year and I’m happy we did. I know that this movie was supposed to be shown last October but was delayed here in the Philippines. Well at least they prepared good movies at the start of the year.

The movie is based on the self entitled book. As much as I want to be a fan of books, I really get bored and never make it to the end. As always, I end up watching the film version of whatever book it is.

Anyway, this is an Indian film – Bollywood style of movie similar to the famous “Slumdog Millionaire” movie. The difference was this didn’t have a dance number like other Bollywood movies. Hahaha!

In the film, they featured the other side of India. I’m not sure if it’s true but this made my initial thoughts of India wrong. This country has a rich culture and are intact until now. That’s a good thing to see in person.

The story started when a writer went to Pi for a good story for him to believe in God. Pi, willingly shared his experience to him and so a flashback was made for the life story of Pi. I am also fascinated that Pi has 3 religions: Buddhism, Catholic and Hinduism! I never thought that is really possible, now I know it can still work out. Hehe.

I like how they made it bearable for the viewers. They told me that Pi was out in the sea for 200 days but I wasn’t able to track it via his tally board. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the wonders of the sea. It may be a bit overwhelming and questions were definitely there and leave you wondering if all what happened were true.

I was amazed with the beauty of the sea at night. The sea animals that were exposed and featured were perfect for the story. The humpback whale, the dolphins, the flying fishes and the jelly fishes were a delight to my eyes. The way how Pi trained the tiger was also stunning. The out of this world explanation but somehow makes sense is both mind boggling but outstanding.

It was all in God’s timing. Although I never knew why Pi experienced all that but it will make you wonder and think about life. Your beliefs, your faith, being hopeful and being strong. The sense of surrendering your life to God was one of the best scenes in the film.

In the end, another “realistic” story was told and afterwards, the famous line was uttered, “‘So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can’t prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?‘”

This one’s a good one. A lot of life’s lessons are presented. Thumbs up!
