Ides of March 2013

Short definition: It just means March 15th.

From the earliest Roman calendars, 3 dates were used as base points for figuring out the current day:

Kalends: The first day of a month

Nones: This is where it gets tricky…
For March, May, July and October, the “Nones” was the 7th day of the month. For the other months it was the 5th day…

Ides:
The 15th day of March, May, July and October. The 13th day for the rest of the months.

“Beware the Ides of March” comes from a warning a soothsayer is to have said to Julius Caesar that fateful morning when he was on his way to the Senate in 44 B.C. It ended up being a really bad day for Caesar – he was stabbed to death by conspirators – most of whom he thought of as friends and colleagues. Obviously, a bad travel day for Caesar…

So, don’t be worried about the “Ides of March” having any bad vibes for your day. Be more worried about the “Ides of April” – tax day – which falls right on the “Ides” of April this year. Oh goody!
