2013 Leaf Peeping: Plan Early

Every indicator is telling me that we will have a early and quick Fall season in 2013.

Leaves on my trees are already heading from green to yellow – and this is a early change considering we’ve not suffered the drought issues this summer as we have for the last four or five. For those who like to make annual trips to see fall color aka “leaf peepers,” you might have to leave a bit early this year.

The map below is from Wikipedia and was updated April 2013. If I find my location in North Carolina and follow the map, I may miss a large portion of the leaves I really want to “peep”:

By November, I would guess that many of the NC leaves will either be brown or on the ground. Not so enticing to look at…and since I am not in the mountains – my primetime for leaf peeping will be later than in those cooler and higher elevation locations.

The best way to schedule your leaf peeping journey to see fall color at its peak is to look for local resources. Here’s a link to Vermont info that is up-to-date for 2013. I found The Foliage Network site last year and they do a awesome job of providing current foliage info. And don’t forget to check on National Parks.
