One Pillar Pagoda (Lotus) Hanoi, Vietnam

One Pillar Pagoda is one of the popular tourist attraction and also highly recommended to visit while traveling in Hanoi, Vietnam. A legendary story was told that this iconic pagoda was built by Emperor Ly Thai To of the Ly dynasty when his dream was granted with a baby boy by Bodhisattva Avalokisteshvara who sat on the lotus flower in a square pond. As when the Queen delivered a baby boy, Emperor Ly Thai Tong instructed his men to build One Pillar Pagoda with the pillar in the middle of the lotus pond, since the lotus symbols of purity and blossoms in a muddy pond, similar to what he dreamt earlier.  

Since then, One Pillar Pagoda becomes a popular prayer site among the locals in Vietnam. It becomes the culture and well-known pagoda for the locals to pray and make wishes to have children in front of small shrine devoted to the Boddhisatva of Mercy in One Pillar Pagoda. 

One Pillar Pagoda opens for free to the public every day. Decent dressing by covering your shoulder, your upper arm and up to your knee level are required when you visit Chinese temples and pagodas as a sign of respect to the religion.
