What is RSV

RSV, short for Respiratory Syncytial Virus, kills up to 200 infants annually, and preemies are the highest risk group. Under-developed lungs and immature immune systems already make it more difficult for premature babies to thrive than full-term babies, making them candidates for serious, and sometimes fatal, RSV infections. While the RSV virus is common, and nearly every child before the age of two will contract the RSV virus, 1/3 of moms have never even heard of the disease. MedImmune realizes the urgent need to spread awareness, because RSV is an annual epidemic. Highly contagious, RSV affects infants and young toddlers in different ways, and symptoms can range from mild cold-like symptoms to severe flu-like symptoms requiring hospitalization.

What to know about RSV

• The RSV virus is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the U.S.
• 125,000 babies and toddler will be hospitalized this year; up to 200 will die.
• Often geographical and rampant from November to March each year
• There is no treatment for RSV; it simply must run its course

How to Prevent RSV

•  RSV is spread through touch, sneezing, and coughing. Avoid being close to people exhibiting any symptoms
• RSV lives on skin and surfaces for hours, so make sure to wash your hands often and keep disinfectant handy
• Awareness

Symptoms of Severe RSV

• Fever of 101.4 or higher (especially in young infants)
• Wheezing and coughing that won’t go away
• Gasping breaths and seeming to have difficulty breathing
• Bluish color around the mouth and fingers
