Top New Years Resolutions for 2015

Around 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year. Among those only about 8% are successful at keeping them. However, some studies show that people who make resolutions are more likely to obtain their goals at some point as compared to those that never make resolutions. About 75% of people are able to keep their resolutions during the first week and about 46% of people are able to make it about 6 months.

Can you guess the New Years Resolutions for 2015?

  • Lose weight
  • Get out of debt
  • Stop smoking

Other popular resolutions include getting a higher education, getting a better job, getting out of debt, volunteering more, doing more traveling, or finding a significant other.

How can you stay on track?

Set realistic goals. One of the reasons why so many people aren’t able to keep their resolutions is that their goals simply aren’t realistic. To stay on track, experts say to make small, reasonable goals.  So if you want to lose 25 pounds, start with an attainable goal of 2 pounds per month.  Perhaps reconsider a resolution – instead of setting a specific amount of pounds you want to lose, why not commit to working out a few times per week?  If you make a date with friends to hike or ride bike often, you are more likely to do it so you don’t let others down.

-Remember that success takes times. Many people break their New Year’s resolutions because they get discouraged. Things like quitting smoking or losing weight don’t happen overnight. If your goal is to get out of debt, why not start with saving $25 per paycheck or giving up a habit like buying coffee out several times per week.  Perhaps set up an auto-draft so a set amount of money goes into your savings account automatically. You’d be surprised how you can gradually start saving money by making just a few minor changes.

Be accountable. Don’t just make New Year’s resolutions, tell others about them. You are more likely to achieve your goals if you have others around you that will help keep you on track. The extra motivation and accountability may be the only things standing in the way of you being able to keep your resolution. Also, if you share your goals/resolutions with others, you may feel more pressure to stick to it, and you can also receive support and encouragement.
