Singapore’s Public Transportation
By 2030 it’s estimated that Singapore will have a population of more than 6.9 million people. Because of this, it’s necessary to have a public transportation system that can accommodate all of these people. Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit system (MRT) was opened in 1987 and has 113 stations with a route of over 93 miles long. It’s considered one of the world’s most advanced subway system’s in the world.
What Makes It Different
Singapore’s MRT has driverless trains on the Circle Lines and these trains are fully automated. The trains on the circle line have three cars each and are able to carry a lot of people with each train being close to 230 feet long. They can accommodate Singapore’s growing population as they are able to carry 931 passengers each. The trains on the MRT system, which are operated by drivers, have six cars each and big central windows that are located at the back and front of the train so passengers can look out and not feel as closed in, in the often packed car. Singapore’s MRT also is one of the cleanest in the world. If passengers are found eating or drinking at the station, or on the trains, it can lead to jail time. Overall, riding on the trains is quite pleasurable generally.
Other Forms Of Public Transportation
Despite Singapore’s modern subway system, it is necessary for the country to have other modes of public transportation available. These include:
Taxis:
Taxis tend to be pricier as compared to other forms of transportation in Singapore, but they do offer door to door services, which can be convenient. Taxi can be booked online, queued at a taxi stand or hailed at the side of the road.
Buses:
In Singapore there are two main bus operators: SMRT Buses LTD. and SBS Transit LTD. There are a variety of bus types, including a Premium Bus Service that costs more, but guarantees passengers seats. There’s also the Fast Forward Bus Service that is offered in the morning and evening and has fewer stops, which allows for passengers to get from one destination to another fairly quickly
Both locals and tourists can easily travel from one place to another thanks to the efficient public transportation system in Singapore. As the population grows leaps and bounds in the next several years, it will surely grow to accommodate the demand. In the next five years Singapore plans to spend about $26 billion dollars on public transportation.
