Celebrating Oktoberfest in the U.S.

October mean it’s time for Oktoberfest. You don’t have to travel all the way to Munich to attend one of these festivals. In fact, there are quite a few celebrations in the U.S. that feature brats, beer and the best of Bavarian culture.

  • Fredericksburg, Texas, October 2-4

This festival is located about 75 miles northwest of San Antonio on the Marktplatz. Not only is there German music and plenty of food and beer on hand, there’s a children’s area as well. In addition to the traditional German fare, there are also foods common to the south like sausage gumbo and giant turkey legs. Admission for adults is $7, kids ages 7-12 are $1 and those 6 and under are free to get in.

  • Leavenworth, Washington, October 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17

This is one of the most authentic Oktoberfest’s in the U.S. The festivities start with the mayor of Leavenworth tapping the keg. Then the other events kick off with four different venues that feature live entertainment. Hotels do sell out quickly and many visitors have to stay in the nearby town of Wenatchee. Tickets for Friday are $10 and $20 on Saturday.

  • Columbus, Ohio, September 25-27

This two day event is jam-packed with a lot of festivities. There are three covered pavilions, each 100 years old, that house many of the events. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the festival. There are two stages and dance floors and this event is bustling with activity. Admission to the festival is free.

  • Tulsa, Oklahoma, October 22-25

Those who organize this event strive to align it as close to authentic Bavarian culture as possible. While there is a lot of music being played and a variety of beers on tap, one of the things that makes Oktoberfest in Tulsa a much loved event is the food. Attendees can find everything from Bavarian cheesecake to a variety of traditional German breads. The location of the event, at River West Festival Park, was recently renovated so there are many new tents and stages to house all of the attendees and entertainment. Admission tickets start at $7 per person.

I love Oktoberfest. There’s nothing like eating potato pancakes with a side of applesauce and washing it down with an ice cold beer. Don’t forget to come to any of these events early and planning on staying late as you surely don’t want to miss any of the polkas or parades that might be taking place.
