New Orleans 10 Years Later

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans and caused around $100 billion in damages. During the past decade the city has undergone a major overhaul in order to gain back what was lost. In fact, not only has New Orleans been revived, there are many new establishments for visitors and residents to enjoy.

Hotels

There are plenty of new places to stay in New Orleans. These include:

AC Hotel- This luxurious hotel is only about a block from Bourbon Street. It features a fitness center, lounge and bar.

Aloftt New Orleans Downtown- This hotel features 188 rooms, a root-top pool and a lounge.

Best Western Plus Landmark Hotel & Suites- This hotel isn’t new, but it underwent a $16.4 million dollar renovation. It features 251 guest rooms, a swimming pool and a full-service restaurant.

Restaurants

New Orleans has always been home to some of the best restaurants in the country. A lot of these restaurants were destroyed because of Hurricane Katrina. Ten years later the restaurant scene in New Orleans is hotter than ever with many new restaurant additions.

Altamura- This restaurant will feature dishes like lobster tail, veal and a variety of southern Italian cooking. It is expected to open later this year.

Shava- For those that want to experience rustic Italian cooking, this restaurant surely won’t disappoint. One of the things that makes Shava unique is the wood burning stove. A popular menu item is the pizza that is made out of pita bread.

Purloo- Despite the fact that Purloo is located in the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, it won’t be anything like traditional museum eateries with only a few menu options. They will feature a variety of dishes that are traditional to the south. Purloo will also have an open kitchen so diners can ask the chef questions as their meal is being prepared.

Attractions

It seems that there are even more things for visitors to do today than there was ten years ago. Some of the recently renovated attractions include:

New Orleans Jazz Market- Located on St. Charles Avenue, it’s a great place to go for visitors to experience the area’s signature music: jazz.

Crescent Park- This park allows for residents and visitors an area to go to along the Mississippi where they can spend some time outdoors. It features bike trails and is conveniently located close to shops and restaurants.

National WWII Museum- This museum, located on Magazine Street, is undergoing a $325 million dollar expansion which will quadruple the size of the museum.
