World Maritime Day, September 24, 2015

The word “maritime” means basically anything having to do with water. Today the world celebrates the seas and oceans with World Maritime Day. This resource is very important as many animals live in the various bodies of water, it’s used as a method of transporting items like food and it provides us with the opportunity to partake in many water related sports.

Fun Maritime Facts
-The highest tides in the world take place is the area that separates Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, called Bay of Fundy. Some of the highest tides ever recorded reach heights that are taller than three stories.
-The ocean is about 3,795 meters deep. Humans have only explored about 10% of it.
-It’s estimated that as much of 80% of living beings can be found in the ocean.
-About 90% of the world’s volcanic activity actually occurs in the oceans.
-The largest body of water in the world is the Pacific Ocean. Currently it occupies about a third of the surface of the earth. Its area is approximately 179.7 million square kilometers.
-The oceans contain about 50 quadrillion tons of salt. Much of this salt is from ingenious rocks decomposing. The Dead Sea is the saltiest body of water in the world.
-The amount of ice that is present in Antarctica equals the same amount of water that the Atlantic Ocean has.

There are many waterfront destinations around the world. It’s impossible to list them all, but we’ve highlighted the top 5 destinations where various bodies of water have had a huge impact on their everyday life.

Nice is a picturesque and lazy little seaside town. It’s filled with many monuments as well as an interesting beachfront sprinkled with palm trees.

Venice consists of about 188 little islands that make up this city. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle with the cafés, shops and recreational soccer games occurring throughout the day.

Honolulu is considered to be paradise by many. Not only are there vast amounts of fruity little drinks with umbrellas in them, but there are also art museums and a variety of watersports available.
