10 Amazing Waterfalls in the U.S.

Nothing says power or sheer force more than a waterfall. Throughout the world there are many waterfalls to see. Ten of the most amazing waterfalls in the world are located right in the U.S.

1. Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls might be the most famous waterfalls in Canada and the United States. It straddles the international border between both countries and consists of three waterfalls. These three falls are the Bridal Veil Falls, American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. They drain into Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and have the world’s highest flow rate for any waterfall and Horseshoe Falls is considered to be the most powerful waterfall in the U.S. Niagara Falls is located about 17 miles from Buffalo, New York and 75 miles from Toronto. An interesting fact about Niagara Falls is that small icebergs can actually flow down the Niagara River from Lake Erie when it gets cold enough.

2. Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon

These falls are located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation at the bottom of Havasu Canyon. The base of the falls is an aquamarine color and visitors can swim in the natural pools that stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Havasu Falls can be accessed by horseback or foot. It’s about a 10 mile trip from the trailhead. It’s best to make the trek early in the spring or late in the fall when the weather is tolerable. Reservations are recommended as the number of visitors is limited each day.

3. Bridalveil Falls, Yosemite

Bridalveil Falls plunge 620 feet and is located in Yosemite Valley. There is a paved trail from the parking area that leads to the falls which make them easily accessible. Bridalveil Falls are open year round, but it’s best to visit them during the spring or summer months. The spray from the falls is rather strong so visitors should bring a change of clothes as they will probably get wet.

4. Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Located about a 30 minute drive from Portland, Multnomah Falls are quite impressive. They are 611 feet tall and very powerful. The top of the falls can be seen from I-84. Visitors can park in the parking area and take about a 5 minute walk to get to the base. For those that want a close up view, there is a paved trail on Benson Bridge which allows for a view of the top tier of the falls.

5. Palouse Falls, Washington

These falls are thought to be thousands of years old and are the official waterfall of the state of Washington. Palouse Falls are 198 feet high and located on the Palouse River. The falls are found in Palouse Falls State Park. Visitors can camp there if they wish. Palouse Falls were originally named Aput Aput, which means “Falling Water”.

6. Bridal Veils Fall, Alaska

The winter months are the most interesting time to see Bridal Veils Falls as they are frozen. The falls are located around 15 miles outside of Valdez, Alaska along the Keystone Canyon. It is a hike to get to the falls, but for those that don’t want to make the trek they can walk 2 miles on the Valdez Goat trail to get a glimpse of them.

7. Blackwater Falls, West Virginia

These falls are around five stories high and located in Blackwater Falls State Park. They can easily be seen at various point throughout the park. Blackwater Falls earns its name from the tannic acid in the hemlock and red spruce needles that have fallen into it and give the water a tinted color that makes it look black. The falls are open year round.

8. Manawaiopuna Falls, Kauai

This may be the most well-known falls on the list as it was featured in the popular movie Jurassic Park. It’s actually located on a private island so the best way to get up close to it is by a helicopter tour.

9. Amicalola Falls, Georgia

These falls are the tallest cascading waterfall that is located in the southeast. They stand at an impressive 729 feet tall. The waterfall is located in Chattahoochee National Forest and the Amicalola trail allows visitors to hike to it. Amicalola Falls consist of multiple tiers and cascading water.

10. Punch Bowl Falls, Oregon

This waterfall is so beautiful that it is often seen in many photographs. It is located along the Eagle Creek Trail and the pool of it actually resembles a punch bowl. There are numerous swimming areas located downstream of the falls. The Punch Bowl Falls are only about 35 feet tall and they drain into the Columbia River.
