Candy Making Factories Around The World

With Halloween just a few short weeks away it has me thinking about candy! Do you really know what goes into making your favorite sweets? It takes a lot more than sugar and other additives to turn those ingredients into that perfect piece of candy. The following factories around the world give visitors the opportunity to see how candy is made.

Hershey’s Chocolate World, Pennsylvania

This is the ultimate chocolate tour! Located in Hershey, the tour at the Hershey’s Factory became so popular that they actually built a theme park that is centered around making Hershey’s chocolate. The tour starts at Hershey’s Chocolate World. Visitors can see the entire chocolate making process from harvesting the cocoa bean to the actual finished chocolate. One of the nice things about Chocolate World is that there’s so much to do for families including chocolate tasting and creating your own candy bar.

Jelly Belly Factory, California

This tour shows visitors how the more than 150 Jelly Belly flavors are made. The factory is located about 40 minutes from San Francisco. It consists of a 40 minute walking tour that shows the jelly bean making process. Did you know that it takes over a week to make these tiny jelly beans?

Chocolaterie De Beussent Lachelle, France

This 45 minute tour, located in Beussent , reveals the history of chocolate making in the country as well as the cultivation process. The tour also shows how the chocolate is actually produced and the different techniques used. Afterwards guests will have an opportunity to buy some chocolate and maybe even sample a piece or two.

Perugina Chocolate Factory, Perugia, Italy

On the outskirts of Perugia, Italy, there is an extraordinary place where visitors can discover and delight in all of the pleasures of chocolate.  Visit Casa del Cioccolate which includes a museum explaining the history of chocolate, and then its on to the factory.  Visitors look on as the famous Italian kisses, Baci, take shape and witness the masterful skill with which craftspeople bring Perugina chocolate to life. Of course you also get to enjoy the chocolate as well.

Maison Cailler Chocolate, Broc, Switzerland

A very popular stop for tourists in this area.  Book in advance, as lines can take hours to get in.   There are several rooms with special lights effects and animations that will tell you some stories about how chocolate was discovered, how it came to Switzerland as well as the history of the factory. also you can feel, taste and smell the ingredients that they use to make a chocolate. After that you will be given a short lesson, and finally you can taste all chocolates and pralines that the factory produces.

The Candy Factory, Ontario

Fudge, toffee, lollipops and many more candy types are made at The Candy Factory in Collingwood. Visitors can watch a video that shows how the different types of candies are produced. There’s also a viewing area where they can watch the actually candy making process.

Cologne’s Chocolate Museum, Germany

This small chocolate factory, located in Cologne, shows everything from the actual coca bean to the chocolate bar. Each machine has a viewing window where visitors can see what the machine is doing. This allows them to see the individual steps it takes to make chocolate. One of the favorite parts about a visit to this factory is the 10 feet high chocolate fountain where staff members dip waffles into the chocolate for visitors to try.
