Unfortunately, many hotels, internet cafes or resorts charge a hefty fee in order for you to access their Wi-Fi. Luckily there are seven ways to avoid these fees and never have to pay for Wi-Fi while traveling.

Choose The Right Flights

JetBlue is offering flyers free in-flight Wi-Fi. 150 of their planes currently have it and the rest of them will offer it by 2016. Virgin is also offering flyers a similar deal until March 2016 if they have a Netflix. Don’t have a Netflix account? You can sign up for a free 30 day trial.

Read The Fine Print When Booking Accommodations

Some hotels say that they offer free Wi-Fi. However, after further looking into what is offered you may find that their free Wi-Fi is only for certain parts of the hotel such as the lobby. Often times this means that their internet service is slow or you won’t be able to get it in your room. If you know you will be needing to access Wi-Fi while traveling, make sure you choose a hotel that offers it in every part of your hotel without charging you an extra fee.

Visit A National Brand

Stores like Starbucks, McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts usually offer their customers free Wi-Fi. Since there are thousands of these establishments located throughout the world, chances are you are only a few feet from a free Wi-Fi spot. Just remember that the Wi-Fi is free, but the food and beverages aren’t.

Utilize Apps

Apps like Foursquare and 4sqwifi give users Wi-Fi usernames and passwords from various locations throughout the world. You can utilize these apps by planning ahead of time and mapping out where you will need internet access.

Talk To Your Cable Provider To See What They Have To Offer

Some cable providers like Cox and Xfinity have Wi-Fi hotspots at various locations. Before embarking on your trip, talk to your cable provider to find out if they will have any of these hotspots located nearby and inquire on how to access them. Chances are this service is included in your cable or internet package you have at home.

Change Your MAC Address

There are quite a few Wi-Fi connections that are free, but only for a limited period of time. In most cases you can reset your MAC address and it will allow you to reconnect to that Wi-Fi again without having to input any credit card information.

Turn Your Phone Into A Mobile Hotspot

Recently I was riding in a car in practically the middle of nowhere and I wanted to watch a movie on my laptop, but didn’t have internet access. However, I was able to turn my phone into a mobile hotspot and wirelessly connect my computer too it. Many mobile phone providers do include this in subscriber’s monthly plans and it can be very beneficial if you need to utilize the internet, but don’t want to pay for it.
