Even the best-planned travel can come under attack.

Travel insurance offers travelers coverage for unforeseen problems, from a cancelled flight to a serious illness—or in rare cases, even an act of terrorism or the financial default of a travel supplier. If an illness, accident, or other covered unforeseen circumstance forces a traveler to cancel or interrupt their travel plans, they face two potentially major financial losses—money invested in nonrefundable pre-payments and medical expenses that in many instances may not be covered by health insurance.

There are several providers of travel insurance out there.  Airlines and cruises often present a travel insurance option as you are making your purchase on their website.  These will be convenient options to cover basic needs, but it makes sense to compare options before buying the first option you come across.

When it comes to comparing coverage, checking exclusions is as important.  Plans generally don’t cover cancellation due to a change of mind about traveling.  Nor will you be reimbursed if weather wasn’t to your liking.  A cloudy beach week or hot ski outing with melting snow won’t get a refund.  But cancelled trips due to extreme weather conditions are often covered events.
