Bath Great Britain England (6/3-4/2016)

A visit to Bath is a must when touring England!

Map of Bath
Located in the lush Avon Valley with miles of beautiful English countryside surrounding it, Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage City, is one of Great Britain’s gems. Home to Great Britain’s grandest Georgian architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, Bath has so much to offer.

Bath is famous for its natural thermal springs rich in minerals. This inspired the Romans 2,000 years ago to build magnificent temples and a grand bathhouse.

Roman Bath and Abbey
- Bath, England
A visit to the reconstructed Roman Bathsis available to tour but not enjoy the waters. With the self-guided audio guide provided, a tour of the Roman Baths is interesting. The complex of buildings around the baths where built in stages starting in the early 1,700’s. They attempted to reconstruct what they thought the bath might have looked like. Some original stones are included. The Roman Baths can become crowded so visits early or later in the day and midweek is advisable.

Thermae Bath Spa
- Bath, England
You have to have a bath in Bath! We had a wonderful afternoon at the modern Thermae Bath Spa located near the Roman Bath. For two hours you can enjoy the famous natural mineral-rich thermal waters and steam rooms. The open-air rooftop pool is great with its views over Bath.

Pat Loves
Afternoon Tea
at the Grand Pump Room
- Bath, England
Pat loved our romantic visit to the famous neoclassic Pump Room – many points for me! Elegant lunch (Noon – 2:30) or afternoon tea (2:30 onwards) is served with music. We dropped in at 2:00 and were able to order lunch for Wayne and afternoon tea for Pat – both were excellent. Even if you don’t have a meal, you should walk into the Pump Room to have a look.

Bath Abbey - Bath, England
Located in the same square as the Roman Baths is the Bath Abbey church build between 1499 and 1616. For a donation, you can go inside for a nice visit.

We enjoyed having lunch outside at the Roman Bath Kitchen in the Bath Abbey square listening to music played and enjoying this beautiful square. Bill’s on Cheap Street is a nice place for lunch or dinner.

Dining Room at
No1 Royal Crescent Musuem
- Bath, England
If you are interested in how the upper class lived in the early 18th century, a visit to the beautifully restored No 1 Royal Crescent museum is a nice place to do so. Pat like seeing the kitchen and how they entertained.

Puiteney Bridge on Avon River
- Bath, England
We very much enjoyed our boat ride up and down the beautiful Avon River. They leave below the Pulteney Bridge. The Pulteney Bridge is a fun place to wonder with shops and restaurants built on the bridge.

For you Jan Austen fans, many of her novels were based in Bath. There is a Jane Austen Centre museum and gift shop located on Gay Street where you can see memorabilia of her life and have tea with crumpets in a Jan Austen style setting.

Pat Thinks She is Royalty
at Our Hotel (Bailbrook Lodge)
- Bath, England
We also very much liked our stay at Bailbrook Lodge. A stay in this beautiful Georgian country house will give you the feel of how the upper crest lived in their manors. Free parking is easily available. Just a few minutes walk away, bus #13 comes around about every 15 minutes to take you into the center of Bath or taxis are available. Served in a beautiful room with music, the made-to-order breakfast is very nice – the included Champagne is elegant. You can relax in the afternoon with a drink from the bar in the lounge overlooking the garden talking with other guests.

Important driving tip: Because many of the roads in England are smaller country roads with many confusing roundabouts, getting lost is not hard. In fact, it can be fun if you can get back on track.

Here is a wonderful tip... Make sure your rental car has GPS and ask for a lesson in its use at your rental car company. The postal code in Great Britain typically has enough information to direct you to your hotel or destination. So, look up postal codes for your hotels and destinations so you can enter them in as you go through your day of explorations. We used a centrally located church or hotel for the villages. Sometimes the GPS asks to confirm the street name and number, so also having an address helps. Also, often just putting in the town/village name will take you to the right direction and you can follow signs to the town center.
