If you enjoy cruising, some of the best deals can be found on Caribbean cruises in September. There is a risk, as it is during the peak of hurricane season, but if you purchase insurance, some cruise lines do allow you to cancel for any reason and receive future cruise credits to rebook within one year of your cancellation. Hawaii and Bermuda also offer lower pricing during this time, but although they are not hit as often as the Caribbean and U.S., both can get hurricanes.

The U.S. National Parks are a great destination in the fall. Children are back in school, so there are less crowds, and the weather is cooler. If the thought of a bus tour does not appeal to you, train tours through the national parks of Arizona and Colorado operate at this time, and there are driving vacations with suggested itineraries as well.

Eastern Canada including Quebec and Niagara Falls, is another nice destination this time of year. If you want to enjoy the changing of the leaves, then consider going the last two weeks in September. You can take a four to ten day cruise on various cruise lines, including Norwegian, Crystal, Princess, Holland America and Carnival. You can also take a bus tour of Eastern Canada, or just drive up to Niagara Falls.

Europe is also popular in the fall, again because there are less crowds than during the summer months, and the weather is cooler. If you are visiting an area in the Mediterranean, the water is usually still warm enough for swimming or snorkeling. Most popular cities to visit this month are London, Paris, Barcelona, Venice, Rome, Edinburgh, Dublin and the Greek Isles. You can travel various ways, but if you are planning to visit several cities, the most cost effective ways are cruises, tours or train package between each city.

You can take the chance and still travel to Alaska during this time frame, but certain areas such as Denali can get snow, which usually means popular excursions such as helicopter and flight-seeing can be cancelled.
