To get a most distinct taste of Eastern German architecture, head over to Alexanderplatz which is one of the major plazas in Berlin. Before reunfication this was prime city centre of East Berlin. Many of the Communist era buildings can be seen here – retaining the Socialist character of the area.

After reunfication there were grand plans to redevelop the area. However due to economic realities these plans have not taken off. Hopefully these will remain on the drawing board so that the square will not lose its original character.

The most prominent and beautiful public building at the square is the Rotes Rathaus – the Red City Hall. This handsome red-brick building was built in the 18th Century in the Italian High Renaissance Style. The building was heavily damaged during the 2nd World War and was restored between 1951 to 1956.
