The Creepiest Staircases Around the World
Have you ever seen a staircase that gives you the chills just thinking about climbing it? It might be the sheer height of it or all the twisty turns, but some staircases are just downright creepy! Check out some of the creepiest staircases below, if you dare…
Pailon Del Diablo Waterfall In Ecuador
In English the name of this staircase translates to the Devil’s Cauldron and many people think that name fits it perfectly! It is adjacent to a waterfall and made with smooth pebbles that don’t provide a lot of traction. They are very slippery and it’s not uncommon for people to fall and get hurt while they are trying to make their way to the top.
Taihang Mountains Spiral Staircase In China
This 300-foot spiral staircase takes visitors up to the Taihang Mountains. It includes 21 turns and resembles a beanstalk. It is so dangerous that climbers have to sign a waiver that states that they are in good health and that they are not above the age of 60 years old.
Inca Stairs In Peru
This is one of the most well-known staircases on the list. This 600 feet staircase is slippery and covered with granite rocks that are over 500 years old. There are some metallic chains for hikers to grip at some of the trickier parts. Once at the top you can see the Moon temple and catch a view of the Urubamba river down below. Only 400 visitors are allowed to climb these stairs each day. Peru is a very affordable destination. Learn more about the Inca stairs and this interesting country on Escorted South America Tours.
Haiku Stairs In Hawaii
If you want to climb these stairs, then you are out of luck. They are so rickety that they have been closed since 1987. The 3,922 stairs lead to Oahu’s Koolau Mountain Range. So many people have tried to climb them despite the danger that a guard has actually been placed at the bottom of the staircase to keep people off of them.
Half Dome, Cable Route In California
This seven-mile hike to the top of this trek is not for the timid. There is a cable ladder that goes over 400 vertical feet. Just don’t look down as you are climbing up these steps as it’s a long way to the bottom. Once you are at the top you’ll see it’s worth the terrifying trip as you can get an amazing view of Yosemite Valley. In order to make this hike you will have to obtain a permit. These permits can be hard to get as only 300 are issued each day.
