Pancakes Around the World

No one really knows for sure who invented the pancake. Many believe that the 1st century Romans created this dish when they combined flour, eggs and milk. Today, almost every country has their own pancake of sorts. While almost every one of them is round, they can vary a lot in things like thickness, toppings and the type of batter that is used. This is what pancakes from around the world are like.

Pannukakku in Finland
Puffy and golden in appearance, these pancakes are cut up into slices before they are served. They tend to be eaten with sweet toppings like powdered sugar or fruit.

Crepes in France
In France, they opt for crepes instead of traditionally thick pancakes. They are thin and are folded over and filled with either sweet or savoring ingredients. They can include vegetables and cheese or fruit and chocolate.

Sourdough in Alaska
Despite being part of United States, pancakes are different than what you would typically find in other parts of America. They are made with a sourdough starter and became popular in the 1800s.

Cachapas in Colombia
These pancakes are savory rather than sweet. These corn pancakes are served with melted cheese on them.

Okonomiyaki in Japan
If you are looking for a filling “pancake” these are certainly the ones that you want to try. They are very hearty as they are made with a variety of different ingredients like eggs, flours and cabbage.

Tiganites from Greece
Similar to crepes, these pancakes a very thin. They are topped with yogurt, cinnamon and honey.

Kimchijeon from South Korea
These pancakes are similar to the flour pancakes found in America, but with some unique ingredients added. Typical ingredients include scallions and kimchi.

Pikelets from Australia
Instead of being eaten for breakfast, pancakes or pikelets, as they are known in Australia, are served as part of afternoon tea. They are small and thick and can also be eaten as a snack.

Ponnukku from Iceland
While similar to crepes, these pancakes are a bit different. First, they are cooked in an Icelandic pancake pan that looks like a round skillet, but has a thick bottom. This pan allows these thick pancakes to cook quickly. They are served with powdered sugar on top.

Pannekoek from South Africa
These very thin pancakes are served with Milk Tart. Basically, it’s a cinnamon custard that has a spiced crumble.
