Xi’an Beyond the Terracotta Warriors
Xi’an is an ancient city rich with history, culture, and amazing sites to experience. While Xi’an may be best known for its army of thousands of life-sized Terracotta Warriors that were buried during the reign of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, there is so much more to see in Xi’an beyond the Terracotta Warriors. Here are the 4 must-see sites in Xi’an, China.
The Fortifications of Xi’an
Also known as Xi’an City Wall, the Fortifications of Xi’an are immaculately preserved walls that encircle the city of Xi’an. The Fortifications of Xi’an date back to the 14th century under the rule of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang to defend the ancient capital of China, and marks the end of the Silk Road that connected eastern and western traders and brought China untold riches. At over 8 miles long, the Fortifications of Xi’an are some of the longest and best preserved city walls in all of China. The fortifications include a moat, watch towers, drawbridges and gate towers. Xi’an City Wall is ideal for biking or walking tours that allow you to see amazing views of the city. There are also double decker bus tours and gulf cart tours of the wall. The fortifications are being considered for the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is recommended to spend allot at least 3 hours to circle the entire wall.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
Another must-see in Xi’an is the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda located in the Da Ci’en Buddhist Temple. The pagoda was built in the 7th century A.D. during the Tang dynasty. The brick structure originally had five stories, but was later expanded to seven stories, reaching over 200 feet tall. You can climb the twisting staircase and get an amazing panoramic view of the city from the archways on each level. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a sacred Buddhist site, and holds various ancient Buddhist relics and sutras brought from India. The pagoda is decorated with elaborate statues of the Buddha and beautiful, intricate calligraphy. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014 due to its historical and cultural significance.
Opening hours: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Admission: Approximately $10 USD to enter the temple and climb the pagoda
The Bell Tower of Xi’an
The Bell Tower of Xi’an was built during the Ming dynasty in 1384. It is located in the geographical center of the city, where four streets intersect. The Bell Tower is a symbol of Xi’an and features classical Chinese architecture complete with terraces and pagoda rooftops. The beautiful structure offers amazing views of the city and is especially gorgeous at night when it is lit up. Watching the sunset from the Bell Tower is a must when visiting Xi’an.
Opening hours: 8:30 am
Admission: Approximate $6 USD
The Muslim Quarter
If you are looking for amazing, authentic street foods, the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an is where you will find all the mouthwatering local dishes. Located in the corridor behind the Bell Tower, the Muslim Quarter offers several traditional must-try dishes such as roujiamo, marinated beef or lamb skewers served in a bun. Other must-try street foods in the Muslim Quarter are Xi’an dumplings, bread soaked in lamb soup called yangrou paomo, as well as the dozens of noodle stalls.
