It’s hard to narrow it down– but if you are going to explore any ancient ruins in your lifetime, you won’t want to miss these must-see sites.  Here are the top ancient ruins for history buffs, or anyone curious about past civilizations.

Machu Picchu – Peru
This 15th century Incan citadel perched high atop Peru’s Andes Mountains is one of the best pre-Colombian settlements in South America and one of the top ancient ruins to visit.  The awe-inspiring Machu Picchu tops many people’s bucket list, the 1.5 mile trek up the mountain rewarding visitors with views of the surrounding mountains and nearby valleys and the well-preserved ruins of this once great Incan city. The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from April to October. Click to browse Peru tour packages

The Colosseum – Rome, Italy
Constructed in the 1st century A.D., the Roman Colosseum has survived two millennia of history, making it one of the top ancient ruins in the world, with over four million visitors a year.  Also known as the Flavian amphitheater, the Colosseum was the site of gladiator fights and public executions during the early days of the Roman Empire.  Although much of the Colosseum is in ruins from earthquakes, stone robbers, and world wars, it still stands as the largest amphitheater in the world.  For smaller crowds, plan to visit the Colosseum from November to February early in the morning. The Great Pyramid of Giza – Giza, Egypt
No list of must-see ancient ruins would be complete without mention of the Great Pyramid of Giza.  The oldest and only surviving structure of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza was completed around 2560 B.C.  Also known as the Pyramid of Khufu after the pharaoh for whom it was built, the Great Pyramid is one of the most spectacular monuments in the history of humankind and still stands unsurpassed as the tallest pyramid in the world.  Pro tip: plan your visit to the Great Pyramid of Giza from October – November or February – April for less crowds of tourists. Angkor Wat – Siem Reap, Cambodia
Covering over 100,000 acres of land, Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious monument and also one of the top ancient ruins.  Set deep in the Cambodian jungle, the Angkor Wat temple complex was constructed in the 12th century A.D. as a dedication to Lord Vishnu and designed to mirror the Hindu cosmos.  A must-see for history buffs, the ruins of Angkor Wat feature ornate architecture and decorative elements intertwined with the jungle overgrowth.  The best time to visit Angkor Wat is between November – March. Petra – Petra, Jordan
Named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Petra is one of the most impressive ancient ruins for history buffs.  Located in the desert canyons of Jordan, the ancient city of Petra contains massive structures carved directly into the pink sandstone cliffs, the most famous being Al Khazneh, a temple with an ornately-carved facade, also known as “the Treasury.”  Petra was constructed between the 4th century B.C. and 2nd century A.D., and was once a thriving trade center along the ancient Silk Road.  For more temperate weather, visit Petra from March – May or September – November.
