New UNESCO Sites To Add To Your Bucket List

The World Heritage Committee added 29 new UNESCO sites at their 2019 conference, for a total of 1,121 sites worldwide.  Here are the 29 new UNESCO World Heritage Sites to add to your bucket list.

Australia: Budj Bim
This extinct volcano is the site of one of the earth’s oldest and largest aquaculture systems created by the Gunditjmara people who constructed channels and dams in the volcanic rock to trap eel and fish.

Azerbaijan: Historic Centre of Sheki with the Khan’s Palace
Located along the historic Silk Road, Sheki became an important hub and center of wealth from the silk trade in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Bahrain: Dilmun Burial Mounds
Over 21 sites consisting of nearly 12,000 ancient burial mounds built between 2050 and 1750 BCE are evidence of an elaborate burial tradition in western Bahrain.

Brazil: Paraty and Ilha Grande
Paraty was the terminus of South America’s Gold Route, known for shipping large quantities of gold to Europe in the 17th century.

Iceland: Vatnajökull National Park

Portugal: Royal Building of Mafra
Built in the 18th century, the elaborate palace, gardens, and hunting park showcase Portugal’s grandiose wealth.

Portugal: Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte
Built into the slopes of Mount Espinho, this cultural landscape is a Sacri Monti, or sacred mountain, built over a period of 600 years by the Catholic church, complete with the Stations of the Cross, chapels, religious sculptures and formal gardens.

Russia: Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture
This new UNESCO site consists of several churches, cathedrals, and religious structures that represent the Pskov School of Architecture, one of Russia’s foremost architectural schools during its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Spain: Risco Caido and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria
This site contains a large number of prehistoric cave dwellings and temples which predate modern-day Spaniards and thought to belong to a cult of the stars and Mother Earth.

United Kingdom: Jodrell Bank Observatory
The UK is home to one of the world’s leading observatories that has advanced our understanding of astronomy.

United States: The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
