Ways To Get Your Passport Renewed Fast

The standard passport renewal process takes between six to eight weeks, but what if you need your passport renewed sooner than that?  Luckily, there are a few ways to get your passport renewed fast.  As to be expected, the quicker you need your passport, the more it will cost.

Here are some methods for getting your passport renewed in a rush!

What you will need:

• Passport Renewal Form DS-82
• Government-compliant passport photo (Walmart and CVS stores offer this service)
• All associated fees paid, including expedited shipping fees
• You will also need to submit your current passport when applying for a renewal

Less than 6 to 8 Weeks
Processing an expedited passport directly from the U.S. Department of State can take between two to three weeks, not including delivery time.  You can submit all required documentation at an acceptance facility or by mail.  The fee for an expedited passport renewal is $60 in addition to the normal application fee, plus any additional fees for rushed shipping.  In order to speed up the process, you should pay for express shipping when mailing your documents to the U.S. Department of State, as well as including the $16.48 1-2 day delivery service fee for your passport renewal to be returned to you, and clearly mark the outside of the envelope with the word “expedite.”  All fees must be paid by check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State.

There are also third-party services such as RushMyPassport that will expedite your passport renewal and take care of all of the details for you.  Expedited processing from RushMyPassport costs approximately $109, plus government fees and takes about ten to twelve days.

Less than 2 to 3 Weeks
If you have urgent travel plans and need your passport renewed sooner, you can visit a Passport Agency in-person.  There are 25 passport agencies in major cities around the United States.  You can make an appointment at your closest Passport Agency online through the www.travel.state.gov website, or by phone.  You will need to bring proof of international travel as well as the required forms, passport photo, and fees. 

Within 72 Hours
If you have emergency international flight plans, the State Department has an expedited service for “Life or Death Emergencies” to process passport renewals within 72 hours.  You will have to make an appointment at your nearest U.S. Passport Agency and arrive with the required expedited passport renewal form, proof of immediate international travel, and a compliant passport photo.  While this service is reserved for immediate international travel emergencies, you may be able to get your passport renewed in-person at a Passport Agency within 72 hours if you have extremely urgent travel needs. 

Within 24 Hours
Lastly, it is possible to get your passport renewed within 24 hours, but it will cost you quite a bit of money.  FedEx has partnered with RushMyPassport to offer a super-expedited passport renewal service.  The 24-hour passport renewal service is available at over 2,000 FedEx locations around the country.  You can also start the process online at www.fedex.rushmypassport.com.

FedEx’s rush passport renewal service takes care of all of the details for you and includes 24/7 support as well as the ability to track the progress of your passport renewal.  The rush renewal service costs $449, plus government fees and rushed shipping fees for a total of approximately $700 per person.

Keep in mind that there are places you can visit without a passport. Cruise are also a great option. If you depart and arrive back into a U.S. port (closed loop sailing,) you can travel with an original birth or certified copy of your birth certificate.
