One of the must-see sights in Luang Prabang is Kuang Si Waterfalls which is around 30km from the town centre. To get there you can either take one of the many tuk-tuks in town, or get a taxi or van. The journey takes around 1 hour – so although a tuk-tuk ride is much cheaper especially if you share with a few people, taking a van is much more comfortable so we went with that option. You can easily hail a van in the more crowded part of town. A return journey will cost around. Plan on spending at least half a day for the trip. The drive towards the waterfalls is quite scenic.
A short walk from the entrance gate takes you to the waterfalls – and the first sight will take your breath away. The waterfalls are indeed beautiful – and the colour of the water – which is a unique turquoise blue colour, unlike anything I have seen before. The water falls through a jungle full of limestones and empties into a series of cascading pools. The lowest one is also the largest and most crowded with people. Like a series of the most scenic jacuzzis you could ever imagine – you can pick your own favourite area and spend some time dipping in the gorgeous water.
Depending on the time of your visit – the waterfalls could be swamped with people. To avoid the big crowds – go early in the morning or late afternoon.
