In Defense of Socialism
I was sitting on the front porch with a tall glass of honey-sweetened iced tea, reading the latest issue of Gravediggers and Exhumers Quarterly Review, when the holographic projector displayed the life-sized image of Agent 44D, who lives in the Z-Force main frame computer and functions as my e-mail message announcer. She disappeared with a click of my remote and I went inside to see who had sent me a message.
A big smile lit up my face when I found that the message was from ol’ Joe Clark, the driver for the local armored car service. He was downtown at the Bigger Jigger bar with his laptop. Don’t need WiFi with our Peer-to-Peer connection through the Z-Force’s Zero Point mainframe. Our conversations are secure, as they don’t flow through standard internet connections.
Joe was concerned about the intense media campaign against Obama. The talking head wing nuts are at a loss to think of suitably defaming accusations. They’ve tried all of them except ax murderer, it seems. Joe says that they call Obama a nazi, then a communist, then a socialist, and then they just sputter and stammer. Socialist seems to be their favorite, though.
The talking heads and manufactured celebrities say the words, then their listeners load up every forum they can find, repeating what their ears have heard. Joe said that he’s seeing a lot of this on the internet groups, and it concerns him because he doesn’t know how to counter their accusations.
Deep thinkers, when you can find them on a forum, are way out-numbered by keyboard jockeys who have all the time in the world to repeat what they’ve heard, and even embellish it a bit. In the main, the jockeys do not understand the accusatory words they fling out with reckless abandon.
Joe’s a deep thinker, though still a young man who hasn’t seen 60 years yet. These words, socialist, right and left wing, nazi, communist, and others are flung out, he thinks, for their shock value and not that the speaker even knows what the words mean. So he asked me to define socialism, or socialist, since that is the most often used defamatory word.
The conversation flowed back and forth on our machines. I’ll try to summarize it here.
Joe, I told him, let’s stipulate some things before we start so we’ll know we have solid understandings of certain things.
Understand first, that all governments on this planet are imposed upon the people. There is no country you can point to and say that these citizens gathered together and decided to have the form of government that they live under.
Understand also, that it is the nature of all governments now known on the planet to perpetuate themselves in power. In order to do this, they will lie, cheat, deceive, steal and even murder their own citizens to keep themselves in power. In fact, that’s how many governments came into power.
Our own country, USA, is no different. Our form of government was imposed on us by a group of Masons who usurped the previous government, and here we are. In an effort to perpetuate themselves in power, the government and the information media present you with the myth of the Founding Fathers, who are practically deified in historical accounts.
One more stipulation. The power to define is the power to rule.
Control of information flow is critical to maintaining power. In other countries, the state owns the media and no secret is made of it. In-your-face; it’s there. Here, the media are part of the state’s instrument of power, and the fact is covered by the myth of a “free press”.
The current system of government here in the US styles itself as a democracy. Sometimes it styles itself as a republic, depending on the audience and what the message is. It is the natural tendency of any group in power to denigrate and diminish the idea of a different system of power. For decades, communism was the menace. Nothing good can come from communism, and it threatens our way of life, so the story went.
The power to define is the power to rule.
Make a mental note of the fact that the name of the Russian state included the word ‘socialist’. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was the full name. Socialist and republic? Is that not contradictory? We’ll see.
Before communism, there was Nazism, or national socialism. There’s that ‘dirty’ word again.
The American state apparatus had to protect itself from competition of alternate state forms. So socialist, and socialism, became convenient labels to stick on anybody they don’t like, or feel that threatens them. Reinforce that by decades of state-run propaganda, and what are people to think, other than that socialism in any form is bad?
Opportunists, political and economic, took the idea and ran with it. So now all that the man on the street knows about socialism is how bad it is, and what it will do to you or take away from you should you ever fall into the trap of endorsing it. Fear sways the masses, and they vote their fears. Fears of ‘socialized medicine’ keep the doctors’ pockets lined with your money and people dying for lack of care, but that’s another story.
Socialism, no matter what Mssrs. Merriam and Webster say, is when a group of people combine their efforts and money to do for the group what none of them can effectively do on their own. Roads and libraries and fire departments are by their very nature socialist, because they exist to serve the needs of the people.
Let’s expand on that, I said to Joe. Suppose you and a couple hundred of your friends, all like-minded individuals, formed a group to colonize an uninhabited island in the Pacific. A diverse group, y’all are, and you quickly decide that there are services and conveniences that the group as a whole needs. So it isn’t long before some sort of formal social order springs up based on serving the common good. Common good benefits as in bridges and roads and communication and a medium of exchange; let’s call it money. Common good benefits from the protection of a fire department.
And rules. There have to be rules. You can’t build your hog farm next door to the community’s school. And you can’t throw your trash in your neighbor’s back yard. These and other rules are agreed upon, and the community participates in the process.
Soon it is obvious that someone has to enforce the rules. We can’t all run around with guns on our hips and make the rules, or break them, as we go along. And your grandmother, who is old and frail, she deserves as much protection as anyone else. She can’t use force, she has to depend on others for that.
The natural evolutionary process of social beings is that a government of some form will be established. Now you have a formal body to make and enforce the rules. When you blow all the foam off of it, this group, this government that your settlers have established, has a legal monopoly on force and violence.
Now you realize that you have moved 2,000 miles out into the ocean and nothing has really changed. There are limits to what you can do with your property because what you do affects the body politic as a whole. There are obligations to the group as a whole.
There are advantages to living among a group of people as opposed to living a Robinson Crusoe type of life. In exchange for these advantages, you are expected to contribute your share to the maintenance of the group as a whole. You will have to help pay for the roads, schools, bridges, fire and police departments.
Your group has created a social order where common needs and interests are supplied in exchange for some of your income. It isn’t communism, because the state doesn’t own the means of production. It isn’t nazism, because the means of production do not control the state. It is socialist in nature, because it functions to serve the common good.
The people participate in decision and policy making. The form of their participation and how much actual power they retain for themselves will determine the other characteristics of the state. If you call yourselves a democracy, then you would therefore be Social Democrats! But not like the Social Democrats found in Europe. If you call yourselves a republic, then you would be a socialist republic, but not like the one that ruled Russia!
You and your friends have created an idea social order. It works for your group. There won’t be any problems unless you try to move the whole structure to any place on the mainland. Here on the mainland, we have socialism too, but because of the diversity of the population and the intense opposition of political and economic opportunists, the idea itself is under constant attack and while it still works, it doesn’t work to its full potential.
Remember. The power to define is the power to rule. The powers that define are scared spitless that you’ll some day wake up and establish a social order that serves the people and not the money and military interests. That’s why, no matter who is in power here, the message never changes. Socialism is a bad thing.

By the time we had finished the discussion, Joe was comfortable with his knowledge of socialism. He expressed doubts, though, about getting facts into the heads of teabaggers and Beckniks. Not worth your effort, I told him. The country is changing so fast that the teabaggers will be left behind, still standing on street corners with mis-spelled signs.
Thirty years from now, the nation will look back on videos and photos of that era in wonder and amazement.
