CHUCK HAGEL'S NOMINATION? Better think twice..and then think again.HERE ARE THE FACTS!

Dear Senators:

Re: Chuck Hagel’s Nomination as U.S. Secretary of Defense, Open Letter of Appeal

I am urging you to oppose Chuck Hagel’s appointment as U.S. Secretary of Defense and appealing to your sound and wise judgment for the safety of our country, our military, and our allies like Israel at such a currently volatile, unstable time in world affairs.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said it best during his recent interview with The Daily Beast, affirming, “Chuck Hagel’s opposition to Iranian sanctions and support for direct, unconditional talks with its leaders is both at odds with current U.S. policy and a threat to global security.”[1] Further, he added, Hagel’s call for direct negotiations with the terrorist party, Hamas, was “beyond the pale.”[2]

Aside from Chuck Hagel’s blatant contempt for Israel and Jewish Americans, his record exposes alarming conflicts of interest, foreign policy votes, and statements that consistently appease and sympathize with hostile dictators and Islamist terrorist-backing regimes, which—as Senator Cornyn so aptly put it—pose a “global security” threat. This leaves numerous unanswered questions about his loyalties, abilities, and qualifications to safely head U.S. Defense.

Attached is a flyer (http://tiny.cc/wwtorw ) that identifies only several of many distressingly dangerous issues in Chuck Hagel’s background on foreign policy and defense. Yet, it barely scratches the surface of a much lengthier list in which his extremist positions often dissent from the Senate majority.

It is for these and the following reasons, those highlighted in the attached flyer, and much, much more that I implore you, for the sake of our country and of global security, to oppose Chuck Hagel’s confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Chuck Hagel serves on the Advisory Board of Global Strategy Forum (GSF), an independent, non-party “think tank” for research and events that focuses on foreign affairs, defense, and international security.[3] [4] Its website features publications that reveal an irrefutable desire to isolate Israel and its dedication to set a new trend in U.S. foreign policy that forges Arab alliances instead. [5] These include anti-Israel articles that urge President Obama to distance from our U.S. ally, Israel;[6] deny evidence of Iran’s nuclear proliferation and current threats in the Middle East;[7] blame Israel for U.S. presence within the region and for the problems in Gaza;[8] recommend for Arab leaders to side with the Palestinians; [9] and revel in the fact that a Chuck Hagel and John Kerry team will help to ensure that President Obama and the U.S. free themselves of “Israeli shackles.”[10] These are the same views that are consistently reflected in Chuck Hagel’s foreign policy record, affiliations, and comments.

It stands to reason that in a 2009 appearance on Al-Jazeera Chuck Hagel agreed with a viewer who condemned the U.S. as a “world bully.”[11] He also criticized the U.S. and Russia for holding the “lion’s share” of nuclear arms, pressing for U.S. “unilateral” reduction if necessary in a 2012 Global Zero report.[12]

It also is not surprising then that Chuck Hagel serves on the board of the Ploughshares Fund, an organization primarily funded by George Soros that advocates for “the elimination of nuclear weapons” and describes itself as the “largest grant-making foundation in the U.S. focusing exclusively on peace and security issues.”[13] [14] The question is for who? As described on its website, its council strives to “accelerate cuts in U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons.” Its partners, donors, and “large” endowments include radical anti-Israel groups that subscribe to isolating Israel, downgrading U.S. military forces and arms, and engaging in unconditional talks with hostile, terrorist-backing Islamist regimes.[15] [16] [17] (Also see A. Hagel is a paid member of Deutsche Bank’s Americas Advisory Board, which is under U.S. investigation for violating sanctions by siphoning billions of dollars through its U.S. branches to Iran, Sudan, and other sanctioned nations.[18] [19] Perhaps this explains why Hagel, who sat on the Senate Banking Committee, was only one of two senators who in 2008 voted against sanctioning nations that do certain business with Iran.[20]

This might also explain Hagel’s unwavering opposition to U.S. Iranian sanctions and his faithful support for unconditional talks with a nation that is out to destroy the little Satan, Israel, first and then the big one—which namely is us.[21] [22] Hagel even went as far as to send a private 2007 letter to President Bush for a “historic new dynamic in US-Iran relations” and was accused by the Democratic Party in 2008 of blocking Iranian sanctions.[23] [24]

This also leaves some troubling questions about the reasons why Hagel voted to lift sanctions against both Cuba and North Korea several times and his 2008 remarks on the U.S.-Cuban Embargo when he declared, “Great powers engage. . . . Great powers trade.” [25] [26] [27]

In 2008 Hagel co-authored a Wall Street Journal op-ed with Secretary of State Nominee, Senator John Kerry (D-MA), entitled “It’s time to talk to Syria,” writing that “Syria’s leaders have always made cold calculations in the name of self-preservation, and history shows that intensive diplomacy can pay off.”[28] In fact history has shown us the very opposite, and—60,000 massacred mostly unarmed and defenseless Syrian victims later—we now know just how tragically wrong they both were.[29] [30] [31] [32] [33] Nonetheless, true to form, Hagel refused to vote on the 2003 Syrian Accountability Act to impose sanctions against Syria for its support of terrorism and its occupation of Lebanon.[34] [35] It passed 89 to 4 irrespective of him.[36]

On February 17, 2007 Hagel was one of seven Republicans to cross parties and vote in favor of cloture on a non-binding resolution opposing the troop “surge” in Iraq. He was wrong about this too.[37] [38]

Hagel also was one of only two senators to vote against the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act in 2001 at a time when Iran and Libya were two of the worst terror-backing regimes.[39]

When Hagel ran for Senator of Nebraska in 1996 and 2002, he failed to disclose as required (pursuant to Federal Campaign Finance Laws) that he was the owner, Chairman, and CEO of the largest voting machine company, Election Systems and Software (ES&S), which was known as American Information Systems until a 1997 name change was filed for it.[40] [41] [42] These were the only machines that counted Hagel’s votes during his 1996 and 2002 controversial wins. Numerous security problems with them were later uncovered.[43] [44] In 2002 his campaign finance director, Michael McCarthy, admitted that Hagel was still an owner of the McCarthy Group, the parent company of ES&S, and still owned shares in AIS Investors Inc.[45] AIS directly invested in ES&S itself. Nevertheless, Hagel failed to disclose owning or selling AIS shares on his FEC forms or that ES&S is an asset of the McCarthy Group, which lists an investment of up to $5 million in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001.[46] [47]

As president and CEO of the World United Service Organizations (USO) from 1987 to 1990, Chuck Hagel tried to defund and close down the USO port of Haifa, a popular destination for the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet.[48] [49] [50] At a 1989 meeting with Jewish leaders, he divulged his less than friendly sentiments towards Israel and the Jewish community, proclaiming, “Let the Jews pay for it.” [51] A private philanthropist saved it from demise.

Last but certainly not least, Chuck Hagel’s ideas about foreign policy and terrorism are naïve at best and show either a complete disregard for the latter or an utter lack of knowledge and understanding about these vital issues that specifically concern U.S. national security and defense. “Security is mainly a state of mind,” says Chuck Hagel, et al., about “the U.S.-Russian security relationship” in their previously mentioned 2012 report, Global Zero. [52]

Similarly, Hagel negates that Jihad and terrorism stem from an ideology. “Terrorism,” argued Hagel in unreported comments he made during a January 24, 2007 Senate Committee on Foreign Relations hearing, “is not a belief, but instead is a response to despair and a lack of hope. But when people have no hope,” he continued, “when there’s despair, little else matters. . . .” [53]

Of course, the evidence shows that nothing is further from the truth. Experts, such as Middle East Forum president Daniel Pipes, agree that most terrorist leaders are literate, well educated, and often from upper-middle-class to affluent backgrounds. [54] [55] According to Islamist doctrine, the call to Jihad crosses all socioeconomic bounds and is incumbent upon both rich and poor Muslims from all walks of life the world over.[56] [57]

Perhaps even more frightening, however, is that Hagel’s assertions came on the heels of an abundance of contradictory evidence and findings disclosed in the 2007 U.S.A. v. Holy Land Foundation case and 2008 trial.[58] This includes Hamas Charters 1 and 2 and numerous other documents that expose some of the Muslim Brotherhood’s unseemly ties with affiliate organizations in America and its successful efforts to fund the terrorist party Hamas through them. [59] [60] [61] Those listed include the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Muslim Students’ Association (MSA), The Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS), The Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers (AMSE), The Islamic Medical Association (IMA), and 24 other affiliate American based organizations (p. 18).[62]

Just as alarming, however, is the fact that these documents also reveal the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideological framework and, in addition to violent Jihad, a “scientific method” of attaining its goals to impose Sharia law as the “law of the land” and to wipe out Western civilization through various forms of civilized Jihad, as is explicitly expressed on Page 7 of its “An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America”:

The process of settlement is a “Civilization-Jihadist Process” with all the word means. The Ikhwan [“brotherhood” or, loosely defined, Islamic activist] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers [Islam] so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.[63]

Needless to say, this completely debunks Hagel’s analysis and assumptions as categorically false and, worse yet, as a “threat to global security” as Secretary of Defense if confirmed.

Few with a choice wouldn’t prefer to put the nuclear genie back in the bottle. Yet, now that the bottle has been opened and the genie unleashed, Chuck Hagel, the U.S. Nominee for Secretary of Defense, wants to put it back in, but starting with the U.S. and Russia, as hostile regimes like Iran and North Korea continue to build their own.

With all the above factors in mind, Chuck Hagel is not a viable, qualified choice for such a critical role as U.S. Secretary of Defense and is in fact a dangerous one who is not worth the risk. The cost could be dire. I trust, on behalf of our country and all your supporters, it is a risk you are unwilling to take.
