Tonight is yet another GOP debate.

Donald Trump, as he has done so often before, won’t likely win the debate battle, but he will be just as likely to win the post-debate war. This repeated outcome confused me at first, especially during the last two Republican debates that were likely the worst of the worst performances by the New York billionaire. And yet, he followed that up with continued primary race wins, including his very impressive showing this past Tuesday that included a thumping victory in Michigan.

Now I think I’m starting to understand this Trump appeal and why it’s so real…

“Let Trump be Trump.”

That is the sign that hangs on the wall at the sparse Trump campaign headquarters inside of large and mostly empty office space inside of Trump Tower in New York.

It’s a simple phrase, but profoundly enlightening regarding what is now going on within the current American political climate.

When we watch and listen to Donald Trump, we are getting a man being himself. He’s sometimes loud with a penchant to brag, he repeats a few basic beliefs over and over again, he makes faces when he hears someone else criticizing him, his eyes flare and his chest puffs out when that criticism turns more aggressive, he shows open disdain and dismissiveness toward unfriendly media  and much of the long-established political protocols for what a politician should say and not say.

Donald Trump is not a repeatedly rehearsed version of Donald Trump.

You get what you get.

Who else among any of the other candidates with the possible exception of Bernie Sanders, can we say that about?

And of the remaining GOP candidates, who is without question, the genuine article?

Certainly not Marco Rubio. A talented politician to be sure, but therein lies the rub. He’s a talented politician and this is not a political season favorable to politicians. Two weeks ago he did an almost complete personality 180 when he decided to become the Republican attack-dog against Trump and now with a campaign on death-watch, it was clearly a terrible miscalculation likely due in large part because it rang so false.

A similar quality is found in Ted Cruz and it is no accident both Cruz and Rubio are roughly the same age. They strike many voters as good men, but men still in search of who they really are. Cruz lapses too often into ” church-lawyer speak”, his voice rising and then lowering, his hand motions clearly practiced as he punctuates a particular word or phrase. It’s not that what he is saying isn’t right, it’s just that it so often sounds wrong because it lacks sincerity. As you watch him perform, you come to realize he’s doing just that – performing. You can so easily see him in a room by himself repeating his lines, watching his facial expressions in a mirror, and practicing and practicing until he believes he has it “just right.”

And that is why it feels to so many to be so wrong.

In many ways, Ted Cruz is running up against the same problem Hillary Clinton has. The more people hear and see him, the less they like.

Donald Trump is the bull in the china shop candidate, turning over tables and breaking the dishes of the political and media establishment, – and people like it. Millions, even if they can’t explain it in words, feel that something is terribly wrong in this country. We have a military that isn’t allowed to fight due to Obama administration rules of engagement. We have schools teaching kids about things like “white privilege” and the dangers of free speech. We have cities fractured by politicians and community organizers after this country elected its first black president. charging that ongoing racism is the source of all evil in America and that police officers are agents of that evil. The voices for government confiscation of land, liberty, rights, and ownership grow louder and louder while those still willing to speak out about American traditions of freedom and personal responsibility face ever-increasing pressure to go silent.

And here comes Donald Trump, imperfect, but seemingly sincere and undeniably pro-America. He talks about protecting the border, creating American jobs for Americans, of giving the military the respect it deserves, of returning power back to the states, of freeing up the entrepreneurs from the burden of Big Government regulations so they can then create the jobs of the future, of allowing the free market to finally insert itself into affordable health coverage for ALL, and to simply get back to feeling like America is America again.

Mr. Trump calls it, “Common Sense Conservatism.”

I like that. Apparently, so do a lot of other people. At last count, Donald Trump is nearing having accumulated one million MORE primary votes than his closest GOP presidential rival. It’s the kind of number that makes one sit up and take notice that something is going on with this election – something that has the potential to turn the tables over in D.C.

This Donald Trump thing? Yeah, I think I’m starting to get it…
